Rebuilding is never easy, and after a disaster like Hurricane Helene, the challenge can feel insurmountable. We’ve all just faced something beyond our control, catastrophic, but here’s the truth: we’ve faced tough times before, and we’ve survived every single one. In a few years, we’ll look back and remember the storm of 2024—the destruction, the hardships—our losses, but also our resilience, the support, the bonds. We're seeing neighbors helping neighbors. We're seeing kids outside playing. We're seeing families act like families. Right now it could be hard to see through the smoke as we're all still in survival mode, waiting for the power to slowly return to our neighborhoods, street by street, home by home. I want you to know I’m here with you through this, because yes for now it's overwhelming, as it was hard to find the words for this post. This week I’ll be reaching out to check in on the homes we have under contract, set expectations, make sure everything is in order and to help with planning as I can. We have a few families arriving into town this month as early as Monday of next week. In addition to squaring away our own personal lives. Side note: really hoping it's 10/5 or sooner. However, no matter what, together, we’re finding a way, we'll move forward, rebuild better, and find hope in the midst of this all.

As Hurricane Milton makes its formidable entrance near Siesta Key, Florida, we are reminded once again of the formidable power of nature, as well as the resilience of communities in the face of adversity. This Category 4 storm, arriving on the heels of Hurricane Helene, highlights a new era of unpredictability that demands not just preparation, but adaptation. In moments like these, it's not just about battening down the hatches—it's about leveraging our collective capabilities to support those in the path of destruction. FEMA and local authorities are mobilizing resources, and we must also do our part, whether through volunteering, donating, or innovating solutions to help communities withstand and recover from such events. The disruptions to daily life, including campaign events, serve as a stark reminder of what truly matters. In the aftermath of such storms, it is the human spirit, community solidarity, and our ability to overcome adversity that will guide us forward. Let this be a call to action for each of us to contribute in meaningful ways, ensuring that while we cannot control the storm, we can certainly control how we respond to it. I don’t often post, but after witnessing the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and its impact on Western North Carolina, I feel it's important to say something. Our community has always been tightly connected, and in moments like this, that sense of unity becomes even more apparent. The ongoing rescues, support, and rebuilding efforts show just how strong and compassionate we are. This is an event we won’t forget anytime soon. If you have a roof over your head, food on your table, and water to drink, take a moment to be grateful. Unfortunately, many of our neighbors no longer have these basic necessities. Countless families have lost everything. This disaster will have lasting effects on businesses, families, and our community as a whole. Rebuilding will take time, but if there’s one thing I know, it’s that the people of Western North Carolina are some of the most resilient in the country. With the challenges we’ve faced—whether in total loss of lives, homes, businesses, communication, power, or water systems—it’s become clear that our greatest resource is each other. While I’ve seen many discussions about the government’s actions or inactions, and I hope support comes quickly at every level, I believe our real strength lies in the people around us. Instead of focusing on the broader political climate or the world’s current state, let’s remember that real change and recovery begin with community—whether that’s family, neighbors, churches, or local organizations. Let this be a reminder of the values that make Western North Carolina special. Together, we’ll get through this. We’ll rebuild. And we’ll see our community thrive once again.

The devastation in Western North Carolina caused by Hurricane Helene is unimaginable. My heart goes out to everyone affected, and I’m grateful for the tireless efforts of first responders, volunteers, and local, state, and national agencies working around the clock to help those impacted. Amid the devastation, it’s heartening to see companies like Baxter International Inc. stepping up. Their facility in Marion, N.C., a major supplier of IV fluids, was severely impacted, covered in mud with damaged roads and bridges cutting off access. Despite the challenges, Baxter's first priority was to reach out to their employees. Instead of just sending thoughts and prayers, they’ve used ATVs to check on colleagues in hard-to-reach areas and set up an employee support center to provide supplies, even delivering essentials to those who can’t make it to the center. While working to support their employees, they’ve also brought in 500 workers, with more on the way, to repair the facility and ensure hospitals continue receiving the critical supplies they need. In a time when we often hear of businesses putting profits before people, Baxter’s response shows how corporations can rise to the occasion and do right by both their employees and the public. The devastation left by Hurricane Helene across the Southeast, including across the Southern Appalachians and western Florida, is heartbreaking.?ATC has staff, volunteers, and friends who have?been impacted by the catastrophic storms and floods. More than a third of the Appalachian Trail is currently inaccessible, and we expect sections of the Trail will be closed for some time because of bridges that have washed away and downed trees and mudslides obstructing the treadway.?A.T. Communities such as Damascus, VA; Erwin, TN; and Hot Springs, N.C. have been devastated. All national forests in Georgia and North Carolina are closed as is Great Smoky Mountains National Park. And access to and from Asheville, home to ATC’s Southern Regional Office, is extremely limited due to the destruction.?Needless to say, it will be weeks, months, and even years to see recovery from this event. While we hold everyone impacted in our hearts, we are committed to taking necessary action both in the short- and long-term to help these communities. The ATC will respond with unity and hard work to do what we can to assist now and into the future. For ATC staff in the impacted areas, please know we stand ready to support you and your family.?As time goes on, we will help to facilitate recovery efforts by staff, volunteers, and our federal and state partners. ?
