So cool and so rare. Surely a career highlight
Head of Player Development and Wellbeing at The Rugby Players Association | Player Care & Performance Lifestyle | Elite Sport Consultant & Advisor
LeBron & Bronny James made history this week by becoming the first ever father-son duo to play together in the National Basketball Association (NBA) ?? Imagine the full-circle moment for LeBron, one of the greatest athletes on the planet, to walk on court with his eldest son. All the sacrifices, the time away from family when his children were young. Christmas’, Birthdays and other special occasions missed in pursuit of winning on the court. I wonder where LeBron would rank this moment amongst all the trophy’s and the personal accolades…? As a father and as a son - this is easily one of the best things I’ve seen recently ?????????? An awesome discussion in our office yesterday with a couple of Aussie basketball legends, with Brad Newley doing a great job interviewing Jack White. I really enjoyed the conversation and thought I'd share some of my personal takeaways: Overcoming adversity – Jack shared how he’d suffered a torn Achilles in his first season in the NBL. Jack spoke of the disappointment of having such a significant injury at the very start of his professional career, as well as his concern for the risk of losing some of the athleticism that makes him a special player. He endured and overcame by controlling what he could and working tirelessly on his recovery. Focus and dedication saw him come back in 9 months and you get the sense he’s stronger for overcoming the challenge. Whether we like it or not, we will all face forms of adversity in our lives. How we face up to that adversity, the actions we take, informs our chances to make the best of any situation and keep moving forward, ultimately growing from the experience. Learning from Mentors – Jack spoke of his experience with Coach K at Duke, Dean Vickerman’s leadership as well as learning from the accomplished veteran players he’d always looked up to from Melbourne, like Matthew Dellavedova, Chris Goulding and Brad Newley. By learning from others Jack shared that he expects that he has and will continue to make the most of his playing career. My observation is that those (in sport or business) that have the type of personality to want to learn from others, often later become great teachers and supporters of others down the track. This type of role model cycling is critical to foster in any organisation that wants to prosper over the long term. Keeping a balanced perspective – Sports (and business) can have highs and lows. With Melbourne United most recently moving from a big loss against the Breakers at the start of November, to then delivering 2 big wins over the last few days, resulting in moving to the top of the NBL ladder. Jack spoke to staying balanced, focusing on the process and avoiding getting too high or low after a good or less good game. Jack mentioned the belief and culture that has been instilled within the United team that they can bounce back if they put the work in, and have a track record of doing so. I thought this was a really interesting point, as belief and culture often becomes intertwined as long as it informs constructive action. Overall a great experience and we're very grateful that Jack and Brad gave us their time. Go United!
A big thank you to our special guests, Melbourne United basketball player Jack White and Commercial Executive Brad Newley, for speaking with our team. During the Q&A session, Jack shared valuable insights into his success on the court, emphasising the importance of controlling the controllables, maintaining consistency through the highs and lows of sport, and surrounding himself with great people. Our team gained a lot from this session, and we look forward to watching Jack’s career flourish as Melbourne United Basketball Club strives for another successful season. Go United! #MelbourneUnited #ENGIE?

Scottie Scheffler's wife, Meredith, did not join him in Augusta this weekend because she is pregnant with their first child. On Saturday, it was reported that if she went into labor prior to him teeing off on Sunday, he would withdraw from the Masters and forfeit his chance at a second green jacket. At that point, he was leading the field at (-7). If you are not a golf fan, I'll spoil the surprise for you: Scottie finished the tournament at (-11) on Sunday, becoming a Masters champion for the second time in 3 years. I read many, many comments that called out how foolish this would have been. But the one that stood out to me most was this: "He'll be a dad for decades, but his kid will have to live with the guilt of causing his dad to lose the Masters for his whole life." When your identity is rooted in what you do and your accomplishments, I can see how that comment rings true. Scottie's identity is found in something much greater than a green jacket. Much greater than his accomplishments. It is rooted in Christ Jesus and His finished work upon the cross, defeating Satan, Sin, and Death. Amazing perspective by Scottie on this Monday morning. Watch here. The question that produces this answer is asked around the 6:10 mark of the video. The entire press conference is well worth your time. #themasters #pga #golf #identity #perspective #outlook #ScottieScheffler

Little known fact: I was a champion discus thrower. ?????? Growing up, I always played sports. I was considered a jock - a rough and tough ball player, a fierce wing and defensive volleyball player. But I also threw a mean discus in track and field. I loved following Valarie Allman’s recent repeat gold medal victory in discus at the Paris Olympics. Why? First off, this sport is never in the spotlight. The training is intense and there is usually no glory. Valarie made it look effortless and she had her well-deserved moment of recognition. P.S. She also holds the USA national record, and owns 27 of the 30 longest distances for American women in discus throw history. ???? It reminded me of all the work we do behind the scenes: on personal development, our career growth, our skill set, our relationships. Don’t expect people to always pat you on the back for every little thing. You may have to keep on working tirelessly for awhile before that recognition comes. But YOU are also responsible for creating those moments when people finally see you in the spotlight. Some may think, “Wow, she made that look easy.” But most likely, there were hundreds of hours of work behind those big (and small) wins. Your work ethic is the basis of success. You are responsibile for making your successes known. ?????? #wednesdaywisdom #leadership #workethic
