Every person deserves the opportunity to participate in and access the benefits of the digital world. We know that strategic partnerships, opportunities like the Digital Equity Act, leveraging digital navigation services, education about accessibility, building digital skills, and thoughtful policies (such as new NRS changes) are just some of the ways we can foster #DigitalEquity and #DigitalInclusion in #AdultEducation. This morning, #2024IDEAL Consortium members gathered to discuss digital equity and inclusion in their programs and states. Critically, we heard: Douglas Weimer from Maryland Department of Labor shared how World Education resources focused on the #DigitalEquityAct prepared them to engage in conversations with the Maryland Broadband Office to ensure that adult education is included in digital equity efforts in the state. Visit the TIDE Project page here: https://lnkd.in/emCef8MF We learned about the efforts Oregon, Louisiana, Virginia, and Massachusetts are taking to ensure Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is incorporated into instruction across their states. IDEAL participants from these states discussed the importance of supporting instructors’ implementation of UDL Principles by moving slowly, and starting small. When discussing how to support #DigitalSkills development for learners, Connecticut shared how they are using the EdTech Center at World Education’s BRIDGES Checklists to set scheduled guidance for learners, released via newsletters and other channels, to do tasks important to their lives like preparing students for a parent-teacher conference. Check out the learner checklists yourself: https://lnkd.in/eC_S43Gw During the breakout session, Recent NRS Changes - How Does Digital Literacy Fit?, Judy Mortrude shared how we have an opportunity to modernize the NRS to be more accountable for adult learner needs. She also shared that the WIOA definition of Workforce Preparation includes digital skills and this may be a good place to consider how to use alternative placement for digital skills. We love hearing how states are using World Education resources to support their work, prioritizing the needs of learners in their instruction, considering multiple ways for learners to demonstrate progress, and using collective impact to move work forward.?? It's been a little over a month since I attended SXSW EDU 2024, but the themes repeated across conference halls and in the undercurrent of passing conversations couldn't feel more relevant today as our team at Rêve Consulting continues to support our education partners in dismantling the racial equity gaps and employment disparities that persist in our backyard. These themes represent the modern reality of education and will continue to shift how we design for and equip our young people to succeed in the future: 1. Practicing empathy is more important than ever as inclusive education is under attack. 2. The runway for Career-Connected Learning is extending to early childhood education, but a disconnect persists between policy and student impact. 3. The social capital advantage is top of mind but remains difficult to execute authentically and measure effectively. 4. Interviewing youth to understand their lived experience has become table stakes. Inviting youth to sit at the table to design solutions is beginning to disrupt traditional power dynamics for the better. https://lnkd.in/g8Si3y-9
