Our hearts and thoughts are with the families and communities in Los Angeles County affected by these tragic fires this week that continue to grow. We are also inspired by the resilience and dedication of those first responders from around the country working tirelessly to protect lives, homes, and landscapes. These urban fires and fires in the “wild urban interface” highlight the urgent need to adapt communities and provide effective and safe responses. While these fires are in many ways different than the wildfires that have burned millions of acres of forests and rural communities in the West just this last year, they do highlight the need for our society to deepen our understanding of the complexity of today’s wildfires and how we can take action, including in how we manage our forests, to create more resilient communities and landscapes. This has been and will continue to be a priority for our programming, but for now, our focus is on the safety of these communities. #LAwildfires #wildfireimpactseveryone

As investigators try to uncover the causes behind the Los Angeles #wildfires, it's important to recognize that this was not a singular tragedy. The scale may be larger, but this is merely the latest in a string of wildland fires that have wreaked havoc on developed areas. In just the past 18 months, we've seen wildfire disasters in #Jasper and #Lahaina. Now, we're seeing similar disasters unfold in #PacificPalisades and #Altadena. Yet, our foundational fuel models in the United States classify developed areas like the Pacific Palisades neighborhood as "unburnable." We clearly need a better grasp of #WildfireRisk: https://lnkd.in/gzqJ2FwD

This is so informative- Foundational fuel models in the U.S. still classify developed areas like Pacific Palisades as “unburnable.” Yet, recent wildfires in #LosAngeles, #Lahaina, and #Jasper prove otherwise. It’s clear we need a better understanding of wildfire risks in urban-wildland areas to protect communities and improve preparedness. #WildfirePrevention #ClimateResilience #UrbanPlanning

Last week, during my visit to Los Angeles, I saw firsthand the devastation caused by the wildfires in the Palisades and Altadena. What stood out most wasn’t just the damage but the overwhelming gathering of community, with mobilization support offering compassion and patience. I was reminded of this again on my flight back to Austin when I read "The View From Here". The article highlights the challenges ahead for Los Angeles, but also the opportunity to rebuild with resilience and care. https://lnkd.in/g2kbbkNq At CORE GROUP, these values resonate deeply. Restoration is about more than rebuilding structures—it’s about listening to the needs of communities, exercising patience in the face of complex challenges, and working toward a future that prioritizes sustainability and preparedness. We’re arming our teams and members with the latest updates in safety and preparedness, ensuring that when the time comes to rebuild, we do so thoughtfully and sustainably. To support any restorers responding to the fires, our VP of Operations, Jason Gilstrap, has created an open-source safety and preparedness document that will be updated in real-time and available to everyone. ?? The Wildland Urban Interface (WUI), is the area between the wilderness and land that has been developed by human activity, that is susceptible to wildfires. The WUI increase by 2 million acres every year. Did you know that Pennsylvania has the fifth greatest number of houses within a WUI? Here are some tips for keeping your home, family, and pets safe, courtesy of U.S. Fire Administration. #NationalFirePreventionMonth #FireisEveryonesFight

The recent fires in Los Angeles have been devastating, leaving behind loss, fear, and the fragility of life. My old neighborhood in Malibu, where I spent six wonderful years and welcomed my second son, is now 70% gone. Among the losses is the iconic #KeelerResidence by Ray Kappe—a masterpiece of mid-century design that perfectly blended architecture and nature. But in the midst of this heartbreak, I’ve found strength in connection, community, and purpose. Cooking for loved ones, volunteering, spreading kindness, and reflecting on what truly matters have been my anchors. There’s also hope. From neighbors helping neighbors to legacy places standing strong, these moments remind us of the resilience we can build together. This experience has deepened my resolve to help others protect what they hold dear and build a more sustainable, fire-resilient future. In my upcoming newsletter, I’ll be sharing practical fire-hardening tips and resources to safeguard homes and communities. If you’re looking for support, guidance, or a partner to help navigate rebuilding or design challenges, I’d be honored to assist. Let’s rebuild stronger—together. Share resources or support ideas in the comments below, and let’s turn this tragedy into an opportunity for resilience and renewal. #Hope #Resilience #Rebuilding #Community #FireHardening #Sustainability

Mountain lions, wolves, and other apex predators play an irreplaceable role in maintaining the health of local ecosystems. These magnificent creatures are not villains—they’re caretakers, helping to balance populations, foster biodiversity, and even support plant and water health. When a predator like the mountain lion is present, it creates a ripple effect known as a trophic cascade. By managing herbivore populations such as deer, these predators prevent overgrazing, allowing vegetation to thrive. This, in turn, creates habitats for smaller animals, strengthens soil health, and supports cleaner waterways. A single apex predator is like the keystone of an ecological arch—without them, the entire structure risks collapse. Unfortunately, these animals are often misunderstood and unfairly feared. Stories of attacks are incredibly rare, yet they overshadow the vast benefits these predators provide. The truth is, mountain lions are shy, elusive, and pose minimal risk to humans when we respect their space. Instead of fearing these creatures, let’s celebrate them as essential partners in the web of life. Protecting mountain lions means protecting the wild landscapes we all depend on—for clean air, fresh water, and thriving ecosystems. Here’s how you can help: ? Support conservation organizations working to preserve predator habitats. ? Educate others about the vital role apex predators play in nature. ? Advocate for policies that ensure coexistence between humans and wildlife. Let’s shift the narrative from fear to respect and appreciation. Our ecosystems—and our future—depend on it. #conservation #support #advocate #healthyecosystems #wildlife #biodiversity
Hemmed in by highways and killed by cars, California’s mountain lions are isolated in small, unsustainable populations. Barriers prevent young mountain lions from migrating in or out to establish their own home ranges and find mates. To protect them, #California needs clear state mandates to improve #wildlifeconnectivity. We’re urgently working to save these iconic big cats. ?? https://bit.ly/3V4D3Oq
