The process of uncovering historical resources of importance to the LGBTQ+ community is challenging. Much of this history is unknown or overlooked as locations were often kept secret to protect privacy and ensure personal safety in the face of discrimination. History Colorado’s State Historic Preservation Office has been awarded an Underrepresented Community Grant from the Historic Preservation Fund administered by the National Park Service to intensively survey 25 locations associated with the LGBTQ+ community in Colorado and then designate three of these properties to the National Register of Historic Places! This project has enormous potential to significantly expand LGBTQ+ representation on the State and National Registers ????? Currently, only two historic properties in Colorado are recognized for their significance to LGBTQ+ history. It’s crucial to recognize the intersectionality within our community, especially the experiences of Black individuals who are also part of the LGBTQ+ community. At a time when there is so much fear of differences from our own lived experience, it is so amazing to see private industry make posts like this one. Posts like this showcase an organization living into its values, unafraid of judgement or criticism and focused on doing right by its people. I believe that equity, diversity and belonging are the result of inclusion being viewed as an action within an organization - an action with both intention and tangible activities designed to create and foster inclusion. As leaders, it’s important that we recognize tolerance and allyship with marginalized members of our society are only the first stepping stones to a better future for everyone. We must do more than saying “I’m okay with who you are”. While everyone should feel safe and welcome in their workplace, it’s not until everyone feels truly seen for who they are, celebrated for the diversity they bring, and valued for just being their authentic self, that we can begin to see us make meaningful change at work and in the world we live in.
