I'm a big believer that we need more ANDs and less ORs. However, you need to be honest about what stage of learning you're in and adjust your approach accordingly. Abraham Maslow (yup, the hierarchy of needs guy) outlined the four stages people go through when learning a new skill. Here's an example of someone learning to drive a car. Stage 1. Unconscious incompetent (blissful ignorance) "How hard can it be? Mom and Dad drive all the time." Stage 2. Conscious incompetent (frustration) "F*ck this is hard!" Stage 3. Conscious competent (practice) "I'm getting the hang of this, but there's still so much to remember." Stage 4. Unconscious competent (mastery) "Whoa, I don't even remember driving here." So... if you're a Stage 4, marketing black belt like Obaid Durrani—heed his wise counsel. Seek balance, not binary choices. But if you're not, then focus is your friend. Simplify. Improve one thing at a time, then come back and add more to the mix as your mastery grows. And remember... Stage 4 is the end of one S-curve AND the beginning of another. Learning never stops, peeps!
Let's say you're a marketer for a project management tool and you just got budget/approval for a commercial. Out of the following two commercials, which one do you make? 1. A high-production commercial that shows a paid actor sitting in front of a laptop and walking you through some of the main features. It has nice background music, a good set, it's a great commercial. 2. A high-production commercial that shows how the Ancient Egyptians used your project management tool to coordinate the building of the pyramids. It has nice background music, good set, it's a great commercial. Now, when you think about it, they are essentially the same commercial, in the sense that, they both: ? show you a product ? tell you what it does ? associate the product with an outcome But one is arguably more memorable, will be easier to recall, and will most likely be shared around more. So... which commercial do you make? The second one, right? Sure, maybe in this hypothetical scenario where you have budget and can only choose one, you choose the second (hopefully). But this scenario is a metaphor for the content engine your marketing team is responsible for creating. On one hand, you have a content asset that simply gets the message out there (straightforward content). On the other hand, you have a content asset that makes that message easier to remember (conceptual content). And for some reason, we are programmed to think that we need to choose between one or the other—and it leads to endless, pointless debates. But in reality, you don't choose between one or the other—you do both. Marketing is almost never about choosing between two opposites and almost always about achieving a balance of it all. Educational vs. entertaining Paid ads vs. SEO Good design vs. good copy In-feed consumption vs. website visits Straightforward vs. conceptual Features vs. benefits And so on and so forth, as we find more and more alternatives to pit against one another. But the answer to all of those debates above is "don't choose, do both." In instances such as "paid ads vs. SEO," yes, you do both, but how you go about achieving that balance depends on (a) what you're hoping to accomplish and (b) your resources, timeline, budget, etc. So, sure, you're "choosing," but it's only to prioritize, not to eliminate the other option. In instances such as "good design vs. good copy," what even is the point of this very long-standing debate? In instances such as "educational vs. entertaining," they both serve their own purposes - one gets your message out there while the other makes it stick - why do one and not the other? Once we end these pointless debates, get rid of our habit of pitting things against each other, and move beyond asking the wrong questions, we can begin focusing on the mental gymnastics and hard work that goes into achieving a balance of it all and actually creating content engines that drive brand, demand, and ARR growth.
