The white phase concept incorporates a fourth ‘White’ traffic signal head mounted below the green one. This light will come ‘ON’ when there is an Autonomous Vehicle capable of communicating with the intersection controller and knows that it is safe to cross as there is no vehicle in the opposite direction. While the White phase is running the human driver could simply follow the car in front of them. It makes sense logically as it would make the traffic intersection more efficient, however, adding another Signal Head to the traffic signal infrastructure would be very cost intensive. The same ‘message’ could be displayed by a ‘flashing yellow’ or ‘flashing green’ light. The world is moving more towards reducing visual pollution and doing more smart messaging with less infrastructure. Adding a White light is not desirable when the existing infrastructure can be programmed to have the same affect. #trafficsignals #av #signalefficiency #whiteohase #trafficinfrastructure

-----CAV or AV----- The mobility and safety benefits of Connected and Automated vehicles (CAVs) are an ongoing area of research. While several studies demonstrate the advantages of CAVs, there remains a gap in quantifying these benefits over conventional Automated Vehicles (AVs). In a recent article in IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Vehicles co-authored by Muhammad Hussain, Sebastien Glaser, Gregoire Larue, Sepehr G. Dehkordi and Mahmoud Masoud, we evaluated the safety and mobility benefits of CAVs over AVs in Roadworks (RW) conditions, which is a challenging driving environment. By using state-of-the-art models such as Minimising Overall Braking Induced by Lane Changes (MOBIL); and Intelligent Driver Model (IDM), we explored the effectiveness of CAVs over AVs.
