Shout out to all the hardworking professionals out there VE-ing underdrains out of grade crossings! CJGeo recently tackled a challenge in Tennessee where a modular grade crossing deflected due to saturation of the underlying base material. This caused the panels to act like diaphragm pumps, pumping out a bunch of base material and causing the crossing to settle up to three inches. The nearby truck stop and restaurant began fielding customer complaints, and the railroad put a slow order on the crossing.
Working with a local MOW contractor, CJGeo was able to lift all 12 crossing panels back to their original grade before the Bojangles lunch rush. The team used CJGrout 48NHL, known for its 4x FOS for heavy haul rail crossings. This grout can be injected directly into water without impacting its physical properties, cures within a few minutes, and has just enough elasticity to not break apart like cementitious grouts do in high dynamic loading environments.
