Interesting report here - Not surprising to see that embodied carbon or carbon in general is not as mainstream *yet* when we talk about green buildings and a lot of our work is to change that!

?? The findings of our 2023 Sustainability Report, launched at #COP28, highlight the need for sustainable strategies across the built environment. Just look at the current state of #embodiedcarbon calculations--a long road ahead to match the state of practice with what we already do for reducing #operationalcarbon. The positive movement must continue to meet the #BuildingsBreakthrough vision of “near-zero emission and resilient buildings are the new normal by 2030.” Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) https://lnkd.in/gtc3N74w

It’s time to action the ‘S’ in ESG! Today, we join the World Green Building Council and their global network of Green Building Councils, partners, and expert reviewers in launching a new publication ‘Social Impact across the Built Environment’. ?? Why do we measure and account for carbon emissions through Scopes, considering ‘1’, ‘2’, and ‘3’–but we don't consider the social impacts of the built environment upon people in the same way? ??? The built environment is responsible for 37% of global carbon emissions, representing a huge sectoral contribution to climate change. However, whilst often considered an environmental challenge, the climate crisis should also be viewed as a social one, with studies indicating that the impacts of climate change (attributed to human causes) are affecting a staggering 85% of the world’s population. ?? That’s why the framework in this paper, supported by the High-Level Climate Champions, is a bold, new way for the building and construction sector to consider the impact on people at all stages of the life cycle, using three scopes plus scope ‘0’, to adopt an aligned framing for defining, measuring and actioning social impact. Developed by World Green Building Council’s global #BetterPlacesForPeople programme, the paper will be showcased at #COP28 on the 6th of December. ?? We are proud and excited to be a contributor to this report. We have outlined our commitment to a carbon neutral built environment with the publication of a refreshed sustainability charter. In an active response to the climate emergency and both the UK and Scottish government’s net zero targets, we have updated our original charter, to reinforce the integration of sustainability principles into every project and service that we offer. Callum Houston, managing director at Holmes Miller said: “Sustainable buildings bring long term value to clients and communities, economically as well as ecologically. This charter is all about us becoming even more proactive. Government net zero commitments can only be achieved if the built environment sector pulls together and goes far beyond the minimum sustainable measures that it can get away with." ??Madaster Network event: Circularity and climate change in the built environment As part of London Climate Action Week, we are opening up our next Network event to all! In this webinar we will explore the synergies and any potential conflicts between creating low carbon and circular buildings and infrastructure assets. This session will explore what the data shows in relation to these two topics, how they are being achieved in tandem on projects and whether there is a need to choose between these two outcomes in certain scenarios.?It will start with a series of short presentations after which we will have an open discussion focussing on: - Are the impacts of materials included in your net zero pathways? - Are you making changes to your practices now to support future carbon reductions? - What do you need to be able to incorporate more circularity principles into low carbon developments? We will be joined by speakers from our network including Simon Joe Portal and Ness Scott as well as invited guests. Register to join us here: https://bit.ly/3X1DATl

Join our free online webinar on the 9th of April from 9.00 to 10.00 and learn more about "The Product Durability and Lifetime Emissions Dilemma" ?? As part of the European Green Deal, the EU Commission is inciting companies within the Union to produce more durable and longer-lasting products with a focus on circularity. While this is a positive development, it highlights an inherent dilemma within companies producing energy-consuming products which have set ambitious climate targets. In this webinar, we will outline this dilemma and how it manifests itself as concrete challenges for companies. We will also dive into possible solutions such as the potential for industry standards, novel business models, circular design, and climate action demonstrated outside of the #GHG Protocol (such as avoided emissions). We will also present direct inputs to the revision of the GHG Protocol. Speakers:? ?? Fanney Frisb?k, Head of Department, Strategic Sustainability Consulting Norway, Ramboll Management Consulting ?? Janus Kirkeby, Head of Department, Waste & Resource Management, Ramboll ?? Sophie Sfez, Senior Sustainability Specialist, Nilfisk Join the webinar and download the Business Brief here: https://lnkd.in/dN2NPGWf #Klima #Climate #Sustainability #SBTi #GlobalGoals #UnitingBusiness
