As immersive as the second person sounds, it tends to be a major turnoff for readers. Often, second person is used briefly to avoid disrupting the reader's connection with the story. Poetry, for example, is a genre in which second person is used more freely such as Heather Christle's "The Whole Thing is the Hard Part". However, when it comes to novels and other long works, reading in 2nd person is often the least preferred point of view. That is not to say that it hasn't been done, but more or less, it is difficult to execute without losing its hold on the reader. In N.K Jemisin's The Fifth Season, however, she has managed to keep the reader's attention of second person as an indicator of time, the present, for her main protagonist, Essun. Jemisin used 2nd person to give clarity to the time jumps of Essun's character. Because Jemisin did not write The Fifth Season from a second point of view in its entirety, but selectively, readers were less likely to disconnect with the story. What do you think? Does the second point of view have a disconnect somewhere or is it something else? Why do you think novels written in second person are so marginalized? ??? #writluxediscussions #literarydiscussions #secondpointofview #heatherchristle #nkjemisin

Behind the Books is a brand new River Street interview series celebrating the hard-working visionaries creating the magic of small press CanLit. We are honoured to have Noelle Allen join us for our first installment! Noelle is the publisher of Hamilton’s powerhouse small press, Wolsak & Wynn, and the recent winner of the 2024 Arts Champion Award. She is the organizer for Sharp Words: Hamilton’s Winter Book Fair and works with Supercrawl to program the author talks. She is also the past chair of gritLIT and has long contributed to the literary community. To read our full interview with Noelle, visit our blog: https://lnkd.in/gWdkjrTt Here’s an excerpt: Q: What’s one misconception people have about small press publishing? A: That our books aren’t as good as something published by a multinational because they don’t sell as many copies. There are fabulous, innovative books being published by small presses across Canada, which I think are often better than much of what comes from those presses. What we lack is the heft of those enormous marketing departments. If I had as much money to spend on marketing as Penguin Random House does, our books would top every bestseller list. . . . #smallpress #smallpresspublishing #canlit #indiepress #bookishcanadians #books #publisher #publishing #hamiltonontario #publishers #canadianliterature #consciousconsumer #bookishcanadians #bookish #bookishlove #smallpressbooks #canadianauthors #canadianpoet #poetry #nonfiction #nonfictionbooks #literaryfiction #staycurious #readwidely #yas #canadianart #supportthearts #literaryart #literarycommunity
