Amazing to see the rapid advancement and increased excitement around cell and gene therapies. With over 500 therapies pending FDA review and only 30 marketed therapies in the US today (as of March 24’), we are truly just scratching the surface of the potential promise of CG&T and its impact on patients lives. From the perspective of a device guy who is amazed by the technology but has little to contribute to the science itself, I find myself asking several questions….. - As these therapies proliferate across a larger population and are administered by a wider range of users/providers, how can we improve the delivery methods to increase the user experience, reduce costs, and minimize use errors? - What devices will emerge (or be leveraged) to monitor the effectiveness or potential side effects of CG&T on patients post-therapy? - What is the role of AI in monitoring of patients, bio-marker identification and understanding and most importantly advancement of the therapies via collection and analysis of real world data? It was great to get out and about with some of my colleagues, Joe Dobkin & Haven Tyler and hear the latest take on the Advanced Therapy market at the Advanced Therapies conference. There is amazing work being done on disease modifying and curative therapies. As we listened to the talks and walked around the show floor we look forward to seeing more patient and user focused conversations. We also noticed that therapy delivery, companion tools and devices were not part of most of the discussions. As these products become a larger part of our healthcare system, patient- and user-centered development will be critical for quality of life and adoption. We look forward to more discussions on this topic. Early research, iterative research and user engagement along the side of therapeutic development will enable the team decision making to determine the right path and tools to support your mission!
