Detroit Future City's Land Use & Sustainability department aims to promote equity and sustainability in Detroit neighborhoods. They work closely with community and civic leaders to provide training, technical assistance, and support for open space projects. The department is working with the Land and Water Works Coalition and providing consulting services to promote Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI). Their ‘Working with Lots’ program has helped implement over 50 open space projects in Detroit neighborhoods by providing grants and technical assistance to residents looking to transform vacant lots into productive landscapes. It might look like any old street, but to me, it is a sign of a functioning city ?? A core responsibility of the local government industry is maintaining infrastructure assets (mandated through DLGSCI), which includes a vast amount of street lights across Perth & WA. Crime-Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is a principle which guides the way in which we make our city safer. So, when I look at “some new lights”, what I really see is: the LUX (brightness) audit, workforce planning, materials and contracts, and infrastructure maintenance; all in the effort to produce a safer city — It’s the ‘how’ behind the rhetoric that goes into creating a safer city. Costain has successfully delivered a significant upgrade to the south-west infrastructure with the completion of the new A30 dual carriageway between Chiverton and Carland Cross in Cornwall. Opened for traffic on 24 June 2024, after a dedicated four-year project, this vital stretch of road is already making a noticeable difference! ???? The transformation of this nine-mile section has drastically reduced congestion and improved journey reliability just in time for the busy school summer holidays. Despite the challenging conditions—navigating the COVID-19 pandemic and enduring 14 Met Office-classified storms—the team, including over 650 dedicated professionals, accomplished major feats such as constructing three new bridges, ten underpasses, and shifting 2.6 million cubic metres of earth. ????? The positive impacts extend beyond traffic flow. The project has enhanced local wildlife habitats with 33 multi-species crossing points, planted 150,000 trees, and created 4.5 hectares of new woodland. It's also boosted the community with initiatives like supporting Cornwall Air Ambulance and engaging local students in STEM activities.
