Because, as their CEO says, "People moving to the state — whether to work for a university or tech startup — will be looking for ways to get outdoors to exercise." By the same logic, what young person--who can work and live anywhere--wants to settle for a place that hasn't invested in its outdoor infrastructure and quality of place? Just another example of the ways in which outdoor recreation and outdoor assets are becoming more and more integral to traditional economic development. One might not think of abandoned #railroads through rural settings as being pertinent to #cycling in #cities, but they definitely are. These corridors offer mostly car-free connections between urban cores and outlying areas. In some cases, they are long enough to offer links between metropolitan areas. Rails to Trails Conservancy is a US nonprofit organization that focuses on repurposing these #railways for those on foot or on #bikes and other #micromobility. Other countries may stand to benefit from their model, particularly where short freight lines have been supplanted by the #trucking industry. (khp)
