Use that to become better and better in everything you do.” This wisdom has guided me throughout my journey and motivates me to continuously improve in everything I do. Has been an valuable experience! This year, the focus on *sustainable packaging* and the *circular economy* has truly been inspiring. ?? The innovations I’ve seen are pushing the industry forward, helping businesses reduce waste, minimize environmental impact, and optimize costs in the supply chain. I’m excited to see how these developments can benefit both the environment and the bottom line. Yesterday I had to chance to attend the ThePackHub event in the historical Oval Park in London together with Costas Papaikonomou. Thanks Paul Jenkins for making this happen! A full day of packaging experts and brand owners showcasing the next innovations to make the packaging industry more sustainable. Shoutout to team Meadow (https://meadow.global), who looked at an industry that already has 99% recyclability and adopted this to other verticals like beauty & care. No doubt there are a lot of great initiatives to solve the big questions about waste reduction, alternative materials, circular production and re-usability. BUT, and this is really a big but, the big question I left with is: "How can we reach mass adoption for all these great initiatives, when margins and money still rule the decision making?" What could the compelling event be to tip the scale? ?? Do we need to align more between brand owners and supply chain to build what we have vs build what you think you need? ?? Do producers need to partner together more to reach the needed production volume? ?? Do we need to differentiate portfolios more for better margin control? ?? Do we need to regulate more or less to drive innovation? ?? ..... Or is it all of the above and more, but we have a cold start problem? Let's discuss or reach out via DM. First panel of the year next week at Paris Packaging week discussing our work on aerosol recycling the UK alongside Tom Giddings, Predrag Ozmo and Andre Pastore Bertin, PMP. Aerosols represent an interesting challenge in the UK with the deposit return scheme (DRS) regulations passing through the House of Commons earlier this week. While steel aerosols will be relatively unaffected, aluminium aerosols could make up 30-50% of the remaining aluminium stream once used beverage cans are removed though DRS. How will this impact the value chain from collection through to reprocessing? Will the value of the aluminium from sorting facilities change and if so, by how much? And for all aerosol types, what is the current recycling rate, and how can the capture and sorting rates increase to meet non-beverage metal recycling targets? All questions we are looking to answer through the Aerosol Recycling Project over the next eighteen months.
