Some inspiring news out of Imperial College London! ?? ? With a generous grant from the Bezos Earth Fund, Imperial College London will launch a new Centre for sustainable protein research. As an Imperial College Alumni, I'm excited to see this centre position itself at the forefront of transforming our food systems by employing Imperial's expertise in AI, biology, and engineering to tackle the critical challenge of food security. As President Hugh Brady highlighted, "For a sustainable future, we need to ensure that people across the world can be fed adequately and nutritiously with minimal impact on biodiversity, climate, and our wider natural environment." Given my research in sustainable protein solutions, I am particularly excited about this initiative. My recent papers on microbial upcycling of food waste and sustainable waste-to-protein systems underline the importance of innovative approaches to food production. We can turn food waste into valuable resources by harnessing technologies like single-cell protein production, contributing to a circular economy and supporting global food security goals. ?? You can read more about my work here: "Microbial Upcycling of Food Waste Using Anaerobic Digestion for Energy and Single Cell Protein Production" (Piercy et al., 2024) ?? https://lnkd.in/dD9cyJPU "A Sustainable Waste-to-Protein System to Maximise Waste Resource Utilisation for Developing Food- and Feed-Grade Protein Solutions" (Piercy et al., 2023) ?? Our new Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein has launched! ?? The Bezos Earth Fund has granted us $30 million to establish the Centre, which will transform our food systems and protect our planet. The Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein at Imperial is one of only three in the world, with the initial centre based at North Carolina State University and another planned in South East Asia. Our global expertise in AI and Engineering Biology will help us meet the challenge of food security, one of the biggest threats to human and environmental health right now. Our President Hugh Brady says: "Food security is one of the biggest challenges facing humanity. For a sustainable future, we need to ensure that people across the world can be fed adequately and nutritiously with minimal impact on biodiversity, climate and our wider natural environment. "Imperial has the leading-edge research, innovation, partnerships and convening power to advance global food systems and we are very excited by the potential of our new Bezos Centre for Sustainable Protein." What was your first step in sustainability? With me, it was all about food. I had two small children and wanted them to know where their food came from. I had once read about self-picking farms and that sounded like a great idea. After two years on a waiting list, a new #CSA farm started nearby, and 10 years ago we became harvest-shareholders at CSA farm De Klepper. This not only changed our eating habits, we also became part of a new community where we learned all kinds of other things sustainable. The beginning of many next steps in #sustainability. So what was your first step or what triggered you to start asking yourself questions about sustainability?

?? What an enlightening afternoon it was at Peach 20/20’s Sustainability Summit! Delving into the complexities of our global food systems. It was especially eye-opening to hear?Henry Dimbleby?(of Ravenous, Leon and National Food Strategy fame), talking about why we’re facing such complex challenges in terms of our global food systems. Despite the daunting scale of the challenges, exacerbated by the cost of living crisis and narrow profit margins, the imperative of addressing climate change is undeniable and urgent. Amidst these challenges, there were inspiring insights shared by industry leaders like Mark Stretton and Victoria Page from Fleet Street, highlighting the growing significance of green credentials for both consumers and employees. Additionally, Amy de Marsac from Mitchells & Butlers PLC underscored the crucial role of sustainability in attracting investors. We learned the exciting news that Pizza Pilgrims officially secured BCORP certification, congratulations to Thom, James and the whole team on achieving this important status! At Zonal, we are privileged to support initiatives like Planet Peach, stimulate discussion and encourage action towards a sustainable future. We're committed to playing our part in advancing these critical conversations and initiatives. #ZonalUK #WeAreHospitality #Peach2020 #PlanetPeach #HospitalityConference #Networking #HospitalityTech #Sustainability Peter Martin, Mark Stretton, Fleet Street, Stephen Nolan, Nutritics, Mark Chapman, Zero Carbon Forum, Victoria Page.

University of Northampton?Sustainability Summit ? ?? It’s an honour to be involved for the second year running and we are thrilled our Eat Curious Mince, Pieces & Negg received such wonderful feedback. ???? Dr Ebenezer Laryea, an associate professor and the Chair of the Planning Committee for the UON Sustainability Summit, shares his thoughts on the summit so far and how our sustainable Eat Curious range has made an impact. Food is responsible for 26% of the world's emissions! ?? Here's how we can drive sites to improve their carbon impact: - Our products are sustainable. The climate impact of the raw ingredients across our Eat Curious range is approximately 0.93kg CO2e/kg of product. - Eat Curious products are produced on our solar-powered site without the use of isolates, emulsifiers and stabilisers.
