Daily Dollop of Wallop #66 Had a call with a long standing client (of sorts - he is a mate who owns a few different types of bars in East Sussex and he asks me for wine advice, and pays me for it. So hang on, yes indeed, a client!) yesterday morning and after the managers meeting that he holds every Monday, he mentioned to me that the wine list at his smaller venue in Brighton, is the best in town. I interrupted him mid flow and asked "according to who?". He answered "well, we think it's the best, we decided. You look at others round The Lanes and we think ours is the best". It angered me. In short, I advised him never to use the phrase 'the best' unless you have the agreement in the form of metrics, from your competitors to enable you to decide on who the best actually is. To simply declare yourselves 'the best' without any backup is careless and unsubstantiated but also, and most importantly, a COMPLETE TURN OFF. Most people are actually dissuaded from a venue when seeing a sign that reads 'best coffee in town' or 'best burger in the city' or 'best wine list around'. So, I advised him, after a mini argument, to use the word 'favourite' instead. To use this word, is unarguable. It is a far softer way to say that you are the 'firm favourite among guests for a glass of wine' than it is to say something more like the above. This little play on one principle can change things up. Keen to hear some thoughts on this. Leverage your beverage.

Beer and hot dogs are as patriotic as it gets. But cracking open the cooler at your July 4th barbecue, you could be seeing fewer traditional brews, with alternatives like spiked seltzers and canned cocktails stealing their real estate. And you can blame the youngs for that: The youngest cohort of legal-aged drinkers from Gen Z, which encompass the ages from 21 to 26, are “drinking completely different than any other generation we’ve seen before,” according to NIQ’s Kaleigh Theriault. ?? this week’s beer/leadership musing: In my first foray into a New South Wales pub I tried to order a pot of their finest. The response was: “Stupid Victorian, we have schooners here” So I ordered a pot of schooner*…. Which didn’t go well either (For non-Australians: ‘pot’ + ‘schooner’ are names for glass sizes, which oddly differ between states) When I finally got my beer 2 more odd things: It tasted a lot like the yeast bombs in Victoria and another patron referred to it as ‘mother’s milk’ - presumably to endorse its distinction? Pureness? I wasn’t sure (and still aren’t) Since that time the choice of beer has broadened considerably and we seem to order schooners or pints. My experience of leadership has similarly developed. Initially it came with different labels, but was expressed very similarly. Nowadays the label ’leadership’ covers all kinds of expressions. Some are outdated. Some have a legacy that is no longer useful. Most of the newer ones are more flavourful + unique. It has progressed to the point that people have a choice and (like craft beer), many are exercising that choice. What’s your experience? You are at the beach and want a beer. Local ordinances allow for only one beer vendor on the beach. Turns out, a lot of beach goers also want a beer. The line is long. The price was $20 a beer but seeing the long line, the beer vendor raises the price to $25 a beer. People get mad. They shout “you’re price gouging us!” But as fate would have it, You are a local politician. You can solve this problem. Do you: (1) give everyone in line, and anyone else who wants a beer, $15 (2) blame the beer vendor for price gouging and withholding the supply of beer on a hot summer day (3) change local ordinances to allow more beer vendors on the beach

Another glorious summer day, another day with our beloved village local closed. Although I do get a sense that there might be something in the offing. We'll see. Watch this space.
