Digital skills are probably the key skills that are top priority now in every region, and more importantly in prison education. Jayne Hill, Rob Samuels and their team are doing some amazing work in this space at Novus - Foundations for Change to ensure the opportunity is there for all learners to get those digital skills that form such a barrier to climbing the social mobility ladder. #digital #digitalskills #digitalfunctionalskills #essentialdigitalskills
At Novus we provide a vast range of education opportunities in order to meet the individual needs of each learner. However, with the digital landscape constantly evolving it is imperative that we provide digital education in order to prepare learners for the technological world that we currently live in. We work hard to provide our learners with the opportunities necessary to thrive outside a prison setting. This is why we are dedicated to incorporating digital literacy into our prison education programmes. Click on the link below to learn more: https://lnkd.in/gnegFgPT

In recognition of?#neurodiversitycelebrationweek we would like to highlight the importance of tailored education plans and how they benefit neurodiverse learners. When it comes to prison education, we are aware that the 'one size fits all’ approach doesn’t benefit our neurodiverse learners. Tailoring our education plans to meet the needs of each learner is integral to our education provision, so that all learners have the chance to access essential education programmes and services. Tailored education programmes accommodate different learning styles so that learners are able to engage in education in their own way making it a more positive experience for them. A new study confirms education's profound impact on reducing recidivism. A meta-analysis of 79 studies highlights that prison education programs—especially vocational and college education—significantly decrease recidivism rates and boost post-release employment and wages. With returns like $3.05 per dollar spent on vocational education and $16,908 per student in college programs, investing in education for justice-impacted individuals is not just beneficial—it's essential. Through Orijin?'s learning management platform and virtual classroom technology, justice-impacted individuals immerse themselves in education, taking college courses and enhancing their employability via vocational programming. Together, we can create positive change. #ReduceRecidivism #PrisonEducation #SecondChance #Orijinedtech https://lnkd.in/eZ7YdvWa

"Education helped me gain the power to break free from shackles of ignorance." - Simon Garcia, inmate at Ellsworth Correctional Facility On July 1, 2023, the federal government reinstated all provisions of the FAFSA Simplification Act related to incarcerated individuals, providing those deemed eligible with an avenue to pursue post-secondary education through Pell Grant funding. Studies have shown this access has positively impacted students' skills, future employment opportunities, and recidivism rates. Equipping learners who are confined or incarcerated with foundational skills and technical competencies will result in an increased workforce for various trades, reduced incarceration costs due to successful reentry, and maximized public safety in our communities. #ReimaginingCorrections #secondchances

Breaking the Cycle:?University of Cincinnati College of Cooperative Education and Professional Studies, through its UC Aspire Program, has partnered with?Nehemiah Manufacturing Company?on an innovative, on-the-job education and training program. ? Nehemiah, a consumer goods manufacturing company, runs one of the largest second chance programs in the country, and 70% of its workforce is comprised of justice-impacted individuals. Through the partnership, second chance employees attend weekly on-site classes to build foundational math skills and advance their career goals. ? “Many [justice-impacted employees] have experienced trauma and faced barriers to education, so we use practices to help students gain confidence and knowledge,” said Emily Aleshire, Director of UC Aspire. “Nehemiah is empowering its workforce to have these experiences that are positive and safe, while developing the skills they need to earn a higher wage, and to hopefully, consider moving on to additional learning opportunities.” ? ?? Transforming Lives Through Education: Principles for Effective Learning Programs in Correctional Facilities ?? At Nucleos, we believe that providing incarcerated individuals with access to quality education and training programs is crucial for successful rehabilitation, reentry, and employment. To maximize the impact of these efforts, we recommend the following principles when implementing e-learning solutions: ?? Free Access to Education Ensure equal access and encourage participation by providing incarcerated individuals with free access to education and vocational training content and courses. ???? In-Person Instruction Complement and support in-person instruction with education technology, rather than replacing it. A platform that encompasses digital support for all in-person programs is essential. ?? Accredited Courses Offer access to accredited programs that lead to recognized diplomas, degrees, certificates, and occupational licenses through e-learning courses and content. ?? Dedicated Devices Make education and training programs available on dedicated e-learning devices, separate from those used for communications and entertainment. ?? Student Learning Records Align all courses and programs with individual rehabilitation plans and reentry goals, ensuring that progress and learning records follow learners across facilities and into reentry. ?? Agency-Owned Networks Give agencies control of their secure networks, either through leasing-to-own or purchasing equipment outright, to protect sensitive information and allow for network expansion. ?? Customizable Learning Use a platform that easily integrates a wide range of content sources and leverages online programs to provide the highest-quality courses, digital testing, and vocational certifications. ?? Secure Servers Provide education and training programs on a secure internet network, with agency control of network security and equipment. By adhering to these principles, program leaders, instructors, policymakers and legislators can create transformative education and training programs that genuinely impact the lives of incarcerated individuals and support their successful reintegration into society. #CorrectionalEducation #ReentrySuccess #RehabilititativeProgramming #EducationForAll
