When it comes to prison education, we are aware that the 'one size fits all’ approach doesn’t benefit our neurodiverse learners. Tailoring our education plans to meet the needs of each learner is integral to our education provision, so that all learners have the chance to access essential education programmes and services. Studies have shown this access has positively impacted students' skills, future employment opportunities, and recidivism rates. Breaking the Cycle:?University of Cincinnati College of Cooperative Education and Professional Studies, through its UC Aspire Program, has partnered with?Nehemiah Manufacturing Company?on an innovative, on-the-job education and training program. ? Nehemiah, a consumer goods manufacturing company, runs one of the largest second chance programs in the country, and 70% of its workforce is comprised of justice-impacted individuals. Through the partnership, second chance employees attend weekly on-site classes to build foundational math skills and advance their career goals. ? “Many [justice-impacted employees] have experienced trauma and faced barriers to education, so we use practices to help students gain confidence and knowledge,” said Emily Aleshire, Director of UC Aspire. “Nehemiah is empowering its workforce to have these experiences that are positive and safe, while developing the skills they need to earn a higher wage, and to hopefully, consider moving on to additional learning opportunities.” ?
