I have always wondered why a non speciality cold and hot coffee has to be so expensive? Why are we paying 220 bucks for hazelnut cold coffee with whipped cream? Do customers really care if they are drinking single origin espresso while ordering a hazelnut cold coffee? Context is king. I've been working in green coffee sales for around eight years now and about three years ago the price of green coffee went up considerably. Today the C-Market is currently around $2.20 per lb. What might be a little lost on some roasters, cafes and other industry players is that for an importer like Osito, margin's don't really go up all that much when the cost of coffee goes up. This applies not just for Osito but for practically all importers. Theoretically, a coffee we bought and sold for $8 per kg in 2020, might now be selling for $12 per kg. But, the importer won't be making a meaningfully larger amount of profit on that sale (possibly a few cents more). I say all this to highlight the reality that importers are now required to find more cash, take more risk and work in a really challenging space, while receiving no more benefit for that higher risk. I'm not crying for sympathy here - it's a tough time for people across the coffee industry. However, I do think it is sometimes lost on many in the industry just how challenging the current situation is for importers and how crucial our role is to ensuring long term stability for both roasters and producers.

I was asked at a dinner last night, "what's something you've done that you thought you'd never do?" I think it was intended as a personal question... My answer? Launch a decaf cold brew. Today, at the forward-thinking accounts like Erewhon and Sprouts that carry it decaf has become one of our best sellers. I've seen it sell on par with our #1 SKU at certain stores. A few things could be at play here... increasing caffeine consciousness, a new focus on sleep quality, etc. The bigger factor though, and more telling, is the story of an underserved market (decaf drinkers), one we ignored for too long. I don't drink decaf. Making coffee as strong as we do, our initial customers certainly didn't drink decaf. And decaf represents only 10-15% of the coffee market. These factors closed our minds, my mind, for many years to another, bigger truth. All coffee drinkers like "great tasting" coffee, and no one was making it in beverage form for decaf drinkers.
