Will AI eventually take over the role of surgeons? A recent event highlighted the potential of telesurgery, leveraging advanced robotics and technology. In a remarkable demonstration, a surgeon remotely performed a procedure on a banana. Personally, I'm skeptical about AI completely replacing surgeons. While telesurgery and robotic assistance can enhance certain aspects of surgical procedures, the complexity of human anatomy and the need for real-time problem-solving and emotional intelligence are areas where human surgeons excel. AI might be a great tool, but the irreplaceable human touch in surgery will likely keep surgeons at the forefront. As someone who suffers from endometriosis, I find the advancements in robotics and AI in the operating room incredibly exciting! Currently, excision surgery is the gold standard for treating endometriosis, but there is a global shortage of excision surgeons. The potential of robotics and advanced AI visualisation could be a game-changer, making gold-standard excision surgery more accessible to patients worldwide. This is a promising step towards better care for all those affected by endometriosis.
How will robotics and digitisation change operating rooms and deliver better care? That’s the question discussed by our team attending Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery Symposium. They explored insights around robotics, accelerating the adoption of new technology, and how the future of surgery will change with advanced visualisation and generative AI.

Just back from leave - time to regroup and reflect on what we saw at the Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery and what AI is doing for surgery.... The right application for AI is to supplement, not supplant the clinician. As surgery becomes less invasive, surgery becomes more available and decentralised from the Operating Theatre. AI is developing into a position to support the cognitive load on the clinician and spot things that would otherwise be missed. Dr Noriko Suzuki (Suzuki Noriko) illustrated beautifully where we're headed - AI spotting potentially cancerous lesions in NBI imaging feeds that could have gone unseen. Its not the future - its here today. But its no panacea yet - false positives are high, processing on-prem for real-time requires massive GPUs and Dr Suzuki's complaints as a leading LAP surgeon are still fundamental - procedures are fatiguing physically and demand high-skill. We saw lots on AI in imaging - highly promising, but it has a way to go and in need of excellent integration with robotic systems to become transformative. A view of the future for integration here was demonstration of autonomous navigation and cathertisation of the right heart from digital twins. As these technologies mature and integrate, we'll see a new class of surgery emerge. We're seeing the birth of the surgical autopilot. Beyond taking control, AI has a role to play in man/machine interfacing too and in an interesting exchange we discussed how that might look. AI drawing together multiple cues from the surgeon to guide the procedure....not that Da Vinci and Medtronic's Hugo weren't a delight to play with! I'm interested in the move away from fluoroscopy and reliance on CT and the beginnings of this were out in force: low-cost Ultra-NeRF (great talk from Howie Choset - I love Ultrasound and it has a lot still to give) sparked thoughts of intraoperative image augmentation and mixed-mode imaging driven by AI. Affordable, accessible, miniature hardware with zero radiation dosing is around the corner. We saw the sharp end of that from Intuitive's Sylvain Gioux. To see new technologies commercialised so deftly is an inspiration to us all in the field. There's too much to mention, but it was great for the Surgical Team at PA Consulting to be amongst our people. Thanks to Ferdinando Rodriguez y Baena and the vital work his team do in bringing this event together. We're proud to have all of the skills in-house to bring cutting edge technology to the market where it can deliver for patients and we're fortunate to be part of this community.

Will AI replace surgeons one day? ?? This video shows how telesurgery works using advanced robots and 5G technology. A surgeon in London remotely operated on a banana in California. ?? The point wasn’t to save a banana, but to demonstrate just how far this technology has come. Robotic surgery combined with AI and ultra-fast networks could reshape the future of healthcare. What do you think—will AI take over surgery in the future, or will human expertise always be needed? #Innovation #ArtificialIntelligence #Tech #AIinHealthcare #Telesurgery #Robotics #5G #FutureOfMedicine #HealthcareTech #MedicalInnovation #SurgicalRobots

One thing is to be able to perform these operations from a distance, but the robotic assistants' dexterity is well beyond what humans can do on their own. The accuracy and speed are also improved. Most importantly, the higher quality outcomes that these tools provide is unmatched.

Show us when you have done it, NOT just talk some empty words about future. Without metadata, AI is probably the dumbest technology any of you will ever have to use again. Let's try a simple go/no-go test to see if AI works. Is there any today's AI data solution you know, that can interpret and answer the following Chinese-English multilingual questions? With our intellectual property (IP), a copyrighted multilingual metadata, we can provide real time answers, by census geographical locations, as evidence for decision/policy making. "Who, in the Ontario province of Canada, has new US patents granted on the nearest Tuesday (Eastern Time), when the USPTO releases the newly granted US patents on a weekly basis?" "Who, in the "江蘇‘’ province of China, has new US patents granted on the nearest Tuesday (Eastern Time), when the USPTO releases the newly granted US patents on a weekly basis?" Metadata is an enabler. Without metadata, NO data can be found/retrieved, even by the most advanced technologies, like AI, high-end chips, supercomputers, etc. https://lnkd.in/g-aJFnX Does our IP ring a bell to you?
