Is this another AFROTECH post? You bet it is! ?? And let me tell you, AFROTECH wasn’t just a conference—it was a game-changing, soul-stirring experience that I’ll carry with me for a lifetime. The educational sessions were next level. These weren’t your typical surface-level talks; they were deep dives into everything from emerging technologies to leadership strategies and entrepreneurship. The insights weren’t just useful—they were powerful, giving me practical tools to sharpen my skills and elevate my career. It felt like I was sitting in a masterclass led by the brightest minds in the industry. Let’s talk about career opportunities. AfroTech created spaces for action. From career fairs to recruitment events, I connected with top-tier companies who weren’t just looking for talent but were actively working to empower and uplift people like me. These moments felt like more than just chances—they felt like game-changing doors opening right in front of me. But here’s the real magic: the community. AfroTech isn’t just about showing up—it’s about showing out together. The energy in that space was electric. Black tech professionals from all over came to share, celebrate, and support each other in a way that was nothing short of transformative. This wasn’t just networking—it was building a collective legacy. I’m leaving AfroTech fired up and ready to continue pushing boundaries. This is just the beginning, and I can’t wait to see what we build together collectively. ?????

The Lazard New Visions Academy, a partnership with New Visions for Public Schools, is a signature initiative of the Lazard Foundation that provides New York City public high school students with skills, experiences, and relationships that will set them on a path toward professional success. Over the course of the five-week program, colleagues from across the firm participated in career panels, professional development sessions, resume workshops, mock interviews, and networking activities—all culminating in the students’ final capstone projects. Hear from our volunteers about how this rewarding experience impacted them:

This week was amazing!?Getting the 15th Top Workplaces magazine ads in house, finding the next career fair location, a breakfast with Delco SHRM on mental health in the workplace, getting to know you interview with the Independence Business Alliance, joining Tri-State HRMA mixer and Joe-on-a-stick, buying tix to see a Phillies game with my neighbors at Four Seasons, attending an inspiring morning of conversation around ERGs thanks to an invitation from the IBA, and our monthly ERG PRISM meeting. Thanks to Lisa Hughes Lauren Kauffman, executive sponsor Matt Boggie, founders Ben Deane-Schierloh, Michael Gagliardi, Zeynep Günbay, and others, I get to enjoy this safe space at work to sometimes just chat with people who share common interests and goals. ??PRISM is my largest LGBTQ+ local network.?I live in the “wild” as a panelist referred to it this week. At ERG panels in the last month, I have been listening intently and with my business-sales mentality keep asking questions of panelists that are politely phrased but really boil down to ‘how does this make money?’ Before you clutch your pearls, my thought is if we generate revenue for the company as an ERG we will preserve it in corporate culture.?The existence of my ERG is an important part of my work-life identity and has enabled me to bring 100% of myself to a career that I love.?Since November 2019, it has become part of my grounding at work. On the other hand, ERG work is volunteer.?As Amy Schaap, LEED? Green Associate from Turner Construction put it this week, ‘we have our day job and our gay job.’?ERGs help reduce employee turnover, improve performance, and make the business stronger.?ERGs help identify potential leaders within the organization, improve brand image, widen the designated market, and provide a host of other benefits for the business. Back to, an ERG exists, because the business exists.?Should ERGs add ‘revenue generation’ to the list of benefits??Or do they already?

My favourite thing about ACE is hearing the success stories of those who get hired. If you’ve never walked the path of joblessness LONG ENOUGH, it may be hard to grasp how deeply it can unravel the very fabric of a person’s being. In these times, the line between joblessness and homelessness grows ever thinner, with each passing day magnifying the weight of the struggle. But we can change this course. When we create events like ACE, it’s not just for moments of joy or escape—it’s a lifeline, a beacon of hope for one’s well-being. These gatherings are not just for fun, but for the health and healing of our communities. If you’re an organization looking to hire, please DM me to join us at the next ACE event. (Medium-long post) Another wonderful event in the books! ?? ??This time we were welcomed into the Home of the Mavericks! The well organized event is a favorite of mine. The hard work by the University of Nebraska at Omaha School of Criminology and Criminal Justice makes it happen FOR THEIR STUDENTS! 1?? Once again, I left inspired by the students! Knowing they are the future of our field gives me confidence. ??Truthfully, it gives me that safe and comforting feeling like a warm, gooey, cinnamon roll! ?? 2?? Having seen success with it in the past, we came with a diverse mix of personnel. Special Agent, Victim Assistance Specialist, and a Criminal Analyst (and some bonus leadership). Not everyone wants to be a sworn officer. Students are ??VERY?? interested in positions that still support the mission. 3?? Recruiting notes - Have answers available for questions you expect. “Do you have internship opportunities? What is the process?” “What is the academy like?” “If I have to testify, will someone help me prepare?” - If it is a traditional setup for a job fair with a table and your display…ditch the chairs, ditch your phone. You are representing your agency. Move in front of the table to engage with attendees. Show them that they are the asset. - The basics, but often forgotten. Eye contact, ask follow-up questions. Show interest in attendees’ experience and education. Highlight what you believe aligns with your agency. 4?? ?? The New York City Police Department and New York City Police Foundation are partnering to empower NYC youth through the Options Program. This initiative provides workshops and hands-on experiences to develop essential life skills, such as public speaking and money management, while building confidence and a sense of community. At the program’s summer job fair, participants demonstrated their skills and connected with potential employers. Students from 11 schools across the state joined a virtual panel to learn more about career journeys and exploration. The panelists represented four of Vermont’s "most promising jobs": ? Senior Airman Alexandra Banke, Crew Chief, Vermont Air National Guard ? Zeynep Barut, Marketing & Communications Specialist, Vermont Federal Credit Union The panel was hosted by Kathy Terami of Careers CLiC and Mat Barewicz from the Vermont Department of Labor. This event was produced by VSAC's GEAR UP college and career readiness program, in partnership with Careers CLiC, the Vermont Department of Labor, and the J. Warren & Lois McClure Foundation.
