#mulch is not just a decorative addition to your #landscape beds; it's a powerhouse of benefits for your plants and soil health. Here's why mulch is a must-have: 1. **Moisture Retention**: Mulch acts as a barrier, reducing evaporation from the soil surface. This means your plants stay hydrated for longer periods, reducing the need for frequent watering, especially during hot summer months. 2. **Weed Suppression**: Mulch helps smother weed growth by blocking out sunlight and preventing weed seeds from germinating. This reduces the time and effort spent on weeding, allowing your plants to thrive without competition. 3. **Soil Temperature Regulation**: Mulch acts as insulation, keeping the soil cooler in summer and warmer in winter. This helps to maintain more consistent soil temperatures, which is beneficial for plant root health. 4. **Soil Erosion Prevention**: Mulch helps to anchor the soil in place, reducing #erosion caused by wind and water. This is especially important on sloped areas where soil erosion can be a significant issue. 5. **Nutrient Enrichment**: Organic mulches break down over time, adding valuable organic matter to the soil. As they decompose, they release essential nutrients that plants need to grow, promoting soil fertility and overall plant health. Let us know we can help

It's Earth Week, and it's still National Lawncare Month! Give some extra care and attention to your lawn this week. A common narrative holds that lawns and grass are bad for the environment. However, grass and lawns have several benefits, especially if there is a diversity of grass and plants on the landscape. Grass provides a cooling effect, helps produce oxygen, and acts as a sponge for rainwater to mitigate erosion. Diverse landscapes with trees, flowers, and shrubs provide food and habitats for insects and birds. Keep your landscapes healthy with soil amendments for root growth, soil structure, and moisture management. Applications can be liquid or granular, depending on what fits your landscape management plan. We recommend our own products CytoGro (root hormone biostimulant), Enviroplex (boost of humic acid), and Bio MP (a 5-3-2 soil conditioner) as a great starter combination for stronger grass. Reach out to us and our team to learn more! #EarthWeek #NationalLawnCareMonth

How Can This Cute Creature (Earthworm) Positively Affect Soil Health??? The humble earthworm, often overlooked in the grand scheme of #nature, plays a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing #soil health. These tiny, yet mighty creatures are natural soil #engineers, performing tasks that are vital to the ecosystem. ??How Does It #Work? #Earthworms feed on #organic matter within the soil, digesting it and breaking it down into smaller, more accessible #nutrients. As they eat their way through the soil, they create tunnels that aerate the ground, allowing air, water, and nutrients to penetrate deeper layers. This tunneling action also helps to break up compacted soil, making it easier for plant roots to grow and access the nutrients they need. ??Impact on Soil Health: ??Nutrient Cycling: Earthworms accelerate the decomposition of organic material, turning it into nutrient-rich humus, which plants can readily absorb. This process significantly enhances soil fertility and promotes healthy plant growth. ??Soil Aeration: The tunnels created by earthworms improve soil structure by increasing its porosity. This allows roots to penetrate more easily and promotes better water infiltration, reducing runoff and soil erosion. Enhanced Water Retention: By improving soil structure and creating channels for water to move through, earthworms help the soil retain moisture more effectively. This is particularly beneficial in dry climates or during periods of drought. ??Promotion of Microbial Activity: Earthworm digestion stimulates the growth of beneficial microbes in the soil. These microbes are essential for breaking down organic matter and further enriching the soil with nutrients. ??In summary, the earthworm may be small, but its contributions to soil health are immense. By feeding on #organic matter, tunneling through the earth, and enhancing nutrient cycling, these creatures play an indispensable role in creating fertile, well-structured, and healthy soils that support vibrant plant life. Next time you see an earthworm, remember—it’s hard at work, keeping our soils and ecosystems thriving! ???? #SoilHealth #SustainableAgriculture #EarthwormMagic #RegenerativeAgriculture

Summer is here, and we'd like to kick off your weekend with a little plant health care reminder: Healthy soil is the foundation of a thriving landscape. At Pacific Coast Companies, we believe in the power of soil restoration. Sterile, lifeless soil leads to struggling plants and trees. That’s why we love bringing soil back to life, enriching it with organic matter and beneficial organisms. Helpful Tips: Regular Soil Testing: Ensure your soil has the right nutrients for optimal plant health. Composting: Add compost to boost soil fertility and structure. Mulching: Retain moisture and suppress weeds while improving soil quality. In need of a commercial landscaper with experience and an understanding in naturalism and chemical-free care? The soil is a living being. It is literally only the Top 300 mm soil skin that covers our land that supports all terrestrial life. Without it we would be a dead world which why we need to stop killing it with “big Ag” as soon as possible. Regenerative agriculture is our only viable long term future
Worms the workmen of the soil Learn more about these creatures! ?????????????? Earthworms are essential for soil health as they aerate and mix the soil, allowing air and water to penetrate deep into the ground, which promotes plant growth. These creatures are ecosystem engineers that improve soil quality and fertility. Did you know these small creatures have a complex digestive system with a mouth, gizzard, intestine, and anus, but they don’t have eyes, ears, lungs, or teeth? Earthworms are hermaphrodites, meaning they have both male and female reproductive organs, but they still need another worm to reproduce. Earthworms are a crucial part of the soil food web and play a significant role in breaking down organic matter to create humus. They primarily feed on decomposing organic matter like dead leaves and plant roots, helping to break down organic material and recycle nutrients. They are sensitive to light, vibrations, and chemicals, which they detect through receptors in their skin. Earthworms can move at a speed of about 5 inches per minute by stretching and contracting their bodies. There are thousands of species of earthworms, but the most common ones are the nightcrawler, red wigglers, and field worms. While the lifespan of an earthworm varies depending on the species, it typically ranges from 1 to 8 years. Healthy soils with a diverse population of earthworms are often an indicator of good soil quality and fertility. Earthworms are an essential part of the soil ecosystem, and their role in maintaining soil health cannot be overstated. What are some other interesting facts you know about earthworms? Maximize Tree Health with Smart Mulching Mulching effectively maintains moisture, regulates soil temperature, and suppresses weed growth around trees. When mulching, apply a 2–4-inch layer of organic material like wood chips or bark around the tree base, but avoid piling it directly against the trunk, which can cause rot. The mulch should extend out to the tree's drip line (the area directly under the outer circumference of the tree branches) if possible. This conserves water, prevents damage from lawn equipment, and discourages weed growth. Transform your trees with expert care from eos Tree Services.
