Separate the risks ~ This is my 11th or 12th High Sierra Music Festival. I first learned of the fest in 2010 and, except for a missed year or two, I've been a faithful attendee ever since. It isn't just the music, though I've come upon some great bands like Mt. Joy and The Record Company, it's the people watching: The families, the hipsters, the dressed-up kids, the dressed-down hippies. When I first introduced Derek to this scene a few months after we married, his mind was blown wide open. It's such a different scene. Since my hip has been knocked out this time, the electric scooters have been quite handy. We'd carefully glide throughout throngs of people. "Separate the risk!" Our summer camp is just days away and we have been busy preparing so that YOU can have the best time ever! We thought we would put together our best tips for success so that our dancers can enjoy the experience instead of stressing about the details. ?? 1. Tell your dancer about this dance camp they will be attending. Things at the studio will be different and most kiddos will be less thrown off if they know what to expect. 2. Go over basic studio rules: No running around, no screaming, keep your hands to yourself, etc. It's a good reminder that there are still some general expectations. 3. Get to class a little early as the studio gets a little busy at this time of year. Make sure your child has enough time to get used to the change, stop by the bathroom, and say hello ?? to any friends before class starts. 4. Get excited! ?? Our Summer Dance Camp is only for a few days which go by so quickly and we can't wait to dance with all your friends and see all your creativity! ???? Still have questions? Have you ever avoided an exciting opportunity for fear that you wouldn’t measure up? I could’ve made that choice on a recent vacation when my wife, Keri, and I were in Puerto Rico visiting friends. We learned how to salsa years ago and decided we wanted to go dancing in Old San Juan. So our friends took us to La Factoria–rated as one of the top 50 bars in the world and the premier live music salsa club in all of Puerto Rico. Wow! The band was amazing and it seemed like everyone (other than us) on the dance floor could’ve been legitimate contenders on “Dancing with the Stars!” Instead of choosing to be self-conscious about our skills, we decided we were there to dance our best and have a blast. And we did! No one cared that we weren’t accomplished dancers, but they did note that we were having a great time. Keri and I departed the club motivated and energized. Learn to embrace experiences with people who are excellent at something you want to pursue! Travel to a foreign country with your basic language skills (people will appreciate your effort). Sign up for the marathon even if you’ve only done a 5K (it doesn’t matter if you walk). Take art classes with the pros (you’re bound to learn and improve). Or try whatever else interests and scares you! Along the way, you’ll get a chance to see something new, stretch your comfort zone, and expand your understanding of what’s possible.
