Once again, I am loving the opportunity to engage more deeply and directly with those who follow us at the National Policing Institute. We have seen an evolution across the profession from "community policing" to "community-oriented policing," "intelligence-led policing," "rightful policing," and the list goes on... This month, we are talking about "constitutional policing" and what it means to you and what it may mean to those you serve. We know the way agencies connect with their communities is not a one-size-fits-all. We want to know what best practices you have seen around engagement with citizens in the delivery of police services. Are community members part of your strategic planning process? Do you maintain a citizen review board or advisory group? How do you - or an agency you admire - keep tabs on what citizens want and need, and more importantly, where does the concept of constitutional policing come into play?
In this month's issue of ??????????????, we talk to Sheriff Jerry Clayton of the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office about constitutional policing. Sheriff Clayton is intentional, thoughtful, and strategic in all that he does, particularly in his approach to giving his community a seat at the table. We look forward to sharing his insights in the coming days. Until then, let us know: What best practices have you seen around engaging the community in the delivery of police services?

What an inspiring day filled with insights and reflections on race and equality in policing! ??? We delved into the barriers faced by Black, Asian, and Mixed Heritage officers and staff, and how we can start to reclaim our narrative. ?? The importance of diversity of thought to enhance any organisation was clear, especially for policing—where every perspective matters. ?? Feeling safe within policing is the first step toward feeling a true sense of belonging. ??? If we want to tackle racism effectively, we need to ‘turn off the tap’ before we can clean up the mess—it’s time to address the root cause. ?? It was great to see optimism about change! ??. A consideration to shifting from four pillars, Shaun White We discussed focusing on two key pillars: ‘Disproportionality’ and ‘Community Engagement’. The message was clear: don’t embark on this journey alone. There’s ‘strength in numbers’, and having supportive teammates makes all the difference. ???? One thought that stood out—let’s shift from ‘allyship’ to sponsorship, championing each other’s growth and progress. It’s not about a revolution but rather an ‘evolution’, where everyone plays a part in the solution. ?? People in positions of power have the opportunity to ‘flip the switch’ and drive change quickly. ?? Let’s be brave, take that leap of faith, and start shaping the future—just like in agile project management, what we set out to achieve might change as we progress, and that’s okay. ?? Colin B. Although written from a chief of police perspective, this could easy convey to military change of commands/leadership roles and cooperate executive positions. Incredible insight from a great leader.

The appointment of LA's new police chief should be a chance to have a big discussion about the LAPD and the nature of policing. But the discussion has been weirdly silent on some of the biggest issues. I break down the questions we need to be asking in my latest Substack: https://lnkd.in/ghi-7sjH

NPI recently published a new essay as part of our iconic Ideas in American Policing series. In "Can We Fix the "Crisis of Legitimacy" in American Policing?" Dr. Dennis P. Rosenbaum challenges what it means to create effective and tangible police reform. He explains the importance of standardized data collection and performance metrics in determining the quality of police activity—metrics that analyze scale and community sentiment.
