Throughout Earth Week, we’ve been focusing on the problems posed by plastic to our blue planet. Now, it’s time for some solutions! Beckett Colson, PhD and Sarah Youngs of WHOI’s Chemical Sensors Lab have developed a portable tool named Scout to analyze freshwater for microplastics. They can bring Scout to any lake, river, or drinking water supply and immediately get a read on the size and quantity of plastics in that water! The two scientists are working on a smaller prototype that can one day be used on underwater robots, or even attach to your kitchen faucet. This technology will help scientists and resource managers understand the scale of the microplastic problem– and allow them to target and assess the outcome of cleanup efforts. Photonics, a technology as a response to environmental challenges ?? A lot of R&D activities and collaborative projects have emerged at ALPhANOV over the past two years to develop solutions that meet sustainability needs.? We're working to improve the recyclability of materials, sorting and depollution, decarbonization. We also work to help the agri-food and agricultural sectors. The Kokiclean project, for example, aims to offer manufacturers a way of protecting the surfaces of boat hulls with eco-friendly antifouling paints using femtosecond laser texturing.
