The Global Shield Against Climate Risks, a COP 28 brainchild, promises swift financial aid to climate-vulnerable countries post-disaster. It's a move from reactive to proactive support, ensuring quick cash disbursements, customized assistance, and risk-sharing. Developing countries bear the brunt of climate change, despite minimal contributions to it. Traditional aid is often slow and inadequate. The Global Shield's approach is a proactive, predictable step towards building resilience in these communities. For true efficacy, developed nations must ensure adequate funding, transparency, and scalability beyond the initial 8 pilot countries. #COP29: The NCQG should be designed such that finance is available swiftly to countries, communities, and vulnerable groups that need it most. ??? “The effects of #climatechange disproportionately impact women and girls who are responsible for livelihood activities, as well as taking care of children and older people,” notes Nguyen Xuan Phu, a Project Officer for Plan International Vietnam. “They are often left out of the decision-making process during planning for climate hazards, resulting in action that does not take their specific needs and vulnerabilities into account. Hence, women and girls often suffer the most when a climate disaster hits. It is absolutely essential for climate finance to meet the needs and priorities of women and girls and address the root causes of #genderequality. #TodayNews accelerating Climate Adaptation: A Call to Action As world leaders gather for Climate Week in New York, discussions on the United Nations multilateral approach to climate adaptation are underway to set the agenda for #COP29, with a strong emphasis on long-term adaptation goals. Partnership and collective action are crucial in addressing the climate crisis. To achieve meaningful progress, we must prioritize: - Additional Funding: At least 50% of funding should be allocated to adaptation efforts, recognizing the urgent needs of vulnerable communities 1. - National Adaptation Plans: Developing and implementing these plans is essential for building resilience and adapting to climate change. - Focus on the Most Vulnerable: We must direct our efforts towards supporting those most affected by climate change, ensuring equitable solutions. The Adaptation Fund has already made significant strides, mobilizing over $188 million in new pledges and supporting 43 million beneficiaries through 164 concrete projects. As we mark Peace Day at #COP29, let's remember: we are all facing the same ??? storm, but not all of us have the same shelter. Some communities have resources to build resilience to #ClimateChange. But others in conflict-affected regions face these challenges with limited support. There are ways to change this.
