Is Cask Wine the next 'retro' revolution? Glass packaging is recyclable but its also incredibly heavy and challenging (and costly) to ship over distance. The legacy of cask wine is as the bottom of the barrel wine consumed by the desperate, rather than having any credibility still hangs around strongly for many. This is one of those 'really big' challenges (overcoming perceptions) and opportunities (broader environmental impact) that take effort and courage to get going. A starting list of why I think this could be a GREAT business opportunity that is worth investigating more.... ?? Lower carbon footprint for shipping (higher volume, less deadweight, more case efficiency). A New York Times article?from 2008 said,?“Switching to wine in a box for the 97 percent of wines that are made to be consumed within a year would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about two million tons, or the equivalent of retiring 400,000 cars”. ??
