Submit your abstract for The AMSA & NZMSS 2024 Conference symposia before 15/March/2024. Advancements in Monitoring, Modelling, and Forecasting Water Quality for Sustainable Estuarine and Coastal Ecosystems Convenors: Nagur Cherukuru (CSIRO) , Tim Ingleton (NSW Department of Planning and Environmen), Mark Doubell (South Australian Research and Development Institute) Estuarine and coastal aquatic ecosystems worldwide face a significant challenge of water quality degradation, driven by both natural processes and anthropogenic influences. This degradation adversely affects crucial aspects such as aquatic biogeochemistry, underwater light availability, water column productivity, and benthic habitats. The consequences of declining water quality extend to disruptions in the functioning of aquatic ecosystems, ultimately leading to socio-economic losses for human populations reliant on these resources. Consequently, there is an urgent need to employ comprehensive monitoring, modelling, and forecasting strategies to develop sustainable management approaches for estuarine and coastal ecosystems. This symposium aims to unite experts, researchers, and practitioners specializing in estuarine and coastal water quality. The event seeks to facilitate discussions on the latest advancements in monitoring, modelling, and forecasting techniques, providing a platform for sharing cutting-edge research, innovative methodologies, and successful case studies. Key topics to be addressed include progress in sensor networks, remote sensing applications, ecosystem modelling, machine learning models, and integrated monitoring and forecasting approaches. Abstract submissions and active participation are encouraged in this symposium dedicated to advancing the science and application of monitoring, modelling, and forecasting, with a specific focus on sustainable management of estuarine and coastal water quality. #AMSA2024 #AquawatchAustralia #remotesensing #insitusensing #forecasting #waterquality https://lnkd.in/gkN8Esv2

Did you know that optimistic, kind, and altruistic people age better and live longer? Science nailed it down: being kind rewards us at the DNA level. Watch this recording on the power of altruistic values in shaping our personal and planetary wellbeing. Thanks Nova Institute for Health for these much needed conversations! #planetaryhealth #planetarywellbeing
?? ICYMI: Recordings are available from the recent Nova Campfire, “Nurturing Societies: Cultivating Cooperation for Sustainable Well-Being.” This event recognized that the flourishing of people, places, and our planet depends on embracing altruistic, whole-of-society approaches that prioritize the health and well-being of all life, including through sociocultural and policy means. Please watch and share! https://ow.ly/MIuP50TJGwB

???It’s HELCOM Through History time! ??? ? The HELCOM Second Holistic Assessment on the Ecosystem Health of the Baltic Sea (HOLAS II) was published in 2017. HOLAS II gave an update on the overall state of ecosystem health in the Baltic Sea. For the period from 2011-2016 the assessment tracks the achievement on the goals of the Baltic Sea Action Plan (BSAP) and is developed so that the results can support reporting under the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) by those Contracting Parties to the Helsinki Convention that are also EU member states. #HELCOMThroughHistory

Now something specifically for my colleagues and friends in the EU and UK. Have you ever stopped, looked at the rain, the raindrops falling and started thinking about the journey ahead of them? Whether you're standing in the rain in Dijon, Madrid, London, Kyiv, Istanbul or Milano, these raindrops you see touching the ground are all beginning a long journey, sometimes taking years to achieve, that will take them in complete opposite directions, some will cross hundred, if not thousands of kilometers and reach the Black Sea, the Mediterranean, the Baltic Sea, the North Sea or the Great Atlantic Ocean... The great divide (here, the line between river catchments that go in opposite directions) runs across Europe, and with a little knowledge in history, one can easily see how this line makes sense and reflects history and society. So, next time you're in Prague and take a bus to Vienna, or travel from Madrid to Barcelona, from Lyon to Paris or cross the Swiss-Italian border, just stop for a moment and take the time to reflect on this: you're entering a new hydrological realm, something great, something greater than us! 2024 WORLDWIDE TOP-CITED SCIENTISTS - Professor Consoli is amongst the 0.70% most influential in the world (whole carrier) and 0.26% most influential in the world (2023) according to 2024 studies by Stanford University.
It was an immense pleasure to attend (representing PPGEC UFRGS-Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul), today, the Workshop entitled "First Workshop of The Center for Research and Studies on Disasters of Rio Grande do Sul (CEPED/RS)". I want to thank Professors Joel Goldenfum and Carla Schwengber ten Caten for the invitation! CEPED/RS is an interdisciplinary nucleus linked to UFRGS that works in research and studies of natural and anthropogenic disasters and their dynamics, as the floods we have had in May 2024 in southern Brazil. The objective of the union is to support the implementation of flood protection strategies and structures, environmental education and culture of resilience, community preparation and economic recovery, the application of nature-based solutions to reduce environmental impact of urbanization, monitoring and warning of hydrometeorological conditions.
