?? Happy International Youth Day! ?? Today, we celebrate the power, creativity, and resilience of young people around the world. The theme for this year, "Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World," emphasizes the critical role that young people play in driving environmental sustainability and creating a better future for all. Youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow—they are the change-makers of today. From leading grassroots movements to innovating sustainable solutions, young people are at the forefront of addressing some of the world's most pressing challenges. On this day, let's recognize the potential of youth and the importance of equipping them with the skills and opportunities they need to thrive. Whether it's through education, mentorship, or support, we all have a role in empowering the next generation to build a more sustainable and equitable world. Let's celebrate and support our youth, who inspire us with their vision, courage, and determination. ???? #InternationalYouthDay #YouthEmpowerment #SustainableFuture Aftab Ahmad Chattha, Ph.D. Kubra Mehmood, Ph.D National Academy of Young Scientists (NAYS), Pakistan

As we wind down towards the end of the year - at least for us uni students - I've finally got a chance to sit down and write about my experience as UN Youth New Zealand's communications manager for this year's SDG Summit, held at my very own University of Auckland. This was a brand new event for us at UN Youth Auckland, so we really were working from the ground up. We hadn't done anything like this before, combining student delegates with experts from across the field of politics, business, and academia to talk about the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. As such, we needed a stellar team to get everything done. Thankfully, I worked in tandem with some fabulous teammates - Sunisha Dugar, Luca Gemmell-Taylor, Eden Li, Sadiyah Begum, and Ashley Velasquez - who each worked incredibly hard, reflected in the success of the event. We had a few hiccups along the way, but sudden changes within the team and working remotely didn't stop us!! Delegates stepped into the shoes of global diplomats and experts, working together to develop solutions to address some of the biggest issues facing our world right now. Our local experts assisted with this, providing them with detailed insights into the issues and the planning required to create such life changing solutions. This made the Summit not just a experience of opportunities for us, the team, but also for the delegates! Getting such unhindered access to a variety of experts is rare to come across nowadays! I feel incredibly privileged to have been a part of this event. UN Youth does some really great civics work, something that I think goes a long way in making up for the lack of civics education in secondary school. My hope is for more of these events to take place, and if I can help contribute to their success, I'll be more than satisfied. Therefore, if anyone is interested in taking part in the future - as either a delegate or a member of the team - please feel free to get in touch! I'm more than happy to refer anyone through to the appropriate channels/pages/websites! For now, my UN Youth lanyard is hung up high. But, who knows what the future holds? Watch this space!!

Given two minutes at the United Nations ECOSOC Youth Forum, what would you say? Almost one year ago today, I had the privilege to make a ministerial address on behalf of AIESEC at the UN ECOSOC Youth Forum 2023 in New York. I was given two minutes - short enough to be only able to say 300 words, but long enough to bore someone. So I simply asked myself, what did I really want to say? Having been brought up in an East Asian education system where after school tuition were the norm, somehow I struggle to remember what I spent all those hours studying. Then at 18, I had to choose what I was supposed to do for the rest of my life (something that I promptly struggled with). On the contrary, AIESEC is something that I did in my free time at university. It taught me life skills, gave me an early career, presented real problems that I had to solve, and most importantly, a set of values that guide me to be a good global citizen. 7 years in this organisation felt more impactful to me than 15 years of schooling. For a long time I wondered where my education had failed. "Are our systems conditioning young people to value individual productivity over collective responsibility?" Often as a humanity, we are put in positions to compete with each other, where productivity = profit = success. Whereas the challenges we face as a humanity today are far beyond that, and require compromise, acceptance, empathy and collaboration. So looking at this increasingly globalised but fragmented world, what do this generation of young people really need to learn? Though I may not have the complete answer yet, this is the ultimate question I wanted people to think about. So, many drafts later, this is my two minutes. #UN #unitednations #aiesec #youth #education #sdg #unecosoc #nonformaleducation
