Join us for a department seminar, Jeremy Quail on “Positroid envelope classes” on Monday October 7, 2024 from 12:30 pm – 1:45 pm in Student Commons 4125 or Zoom. Email [email protected] for the link. Title: Positroid envelope classes Abstract: Postnikov developed a combinatorial decomposition of the Grassmannian using a class of ordered matroids, called positroids. Positroids are matroids realizable by real matrices with all nonnegative maximal minors. They partition the ordered matroids into equivalence classes, called positroid envelope classes. We prove that every positroid envelope class contains a graphic matroid. We show that a positroid is graphic if and only if it is the unique matroid contained in its envelope class. Finally, we characterize the ternary positroids and their corresponding envelope classes. This is joint work with Puck Rombach. Speaker: Jeremy Quail University of Vermont

The image below is from my most recent and in fact final college project. The theme I had chosen was puzzles, and this final designed poster demonstrates each my completed model and its process.

Thanks Akil Bello for posting "cutting room floor" notes of his critiques of standardized testing in college admissions. This paragraph sums up a lot of my pain points talking and reading about higher education research, policy and practice--particularly in economics, where elitism is pervasive. "Far too many conversations about higher education and success begin from the premise that Harvard is college. That a higher GPA means a smarter student. That a better test score means more qualified. That richer is more capable. And from that vantage point, the only things that make a college worthwhile is its ability to approximate the practices and outcomes of Harvard."
When I was on Eloy Oakley's The Rant ( https://lnkd.in/eGAgCq9c ), I promised I'd publish my notes on the Leonhardt article. Here they are as well as a few other random thoughts from this whole mess.

Starting off the school year with a focus and determination, stop and reflect. If your an educator take this self-audit and see where your at and where you would like to be. How will you get there? Share a strategy that works? A new strategy that you just learned? A strategy that you will try? A self-audit using the New Art and Science of Teaching framework helps educators identify strengths and areas for improvement. By rating themselves on the framework’s 43 elements, educators can focus their growth efforts effectively, ensuring continuous professional development and enhanced teaching strategies. #NASOT #elearning #teachingstrategies #TheNewArtAndScienceOfTeaching #Marzanoresources #earlychildhoodeducation #backtoschool #classroomresources #teacherresources
