WINNER! 2024 was the year we proved that great design is about building our futures, not just structures. Leadership in real estate isn't just about square footage or construction value – it's about creating spaces that transform how people live, work, and connect. This year, I had the incredible opportunity to do just that, pushing the boundaries of sustainable design while mentoring the next generation of industry leaders. Let me take you through a year of building – literally and figuratively: ? Proud Son Moment: Celebrating my dad, Donald Powell, FAIA, NCARB, RID, being named among Dallas' Most Powerful Business Leaders for the TENTH consecutive year! Family legacy isn't just about continuing a mission of excellence and innovation, but building deep, lasting relationships and honoring our commitments. https://lnkd.in/gzxbhbgj ? UrbanPlan Impact: Our ULI Dallas-Fort Worth volunteers coached over 600 students this year, transforming how the next generation understands urban development. Watching these young minds tackle complex real estate challenges? That's the real return on investment. https://lnkd.in/g_Hc2bxi ? Mixed-Use Marvel: Austin's first mass timber development opened at T3 Eastside, proving that sustainability isn't just a buzzword – it's the future of design. By integrating residential and office spaces in a fundamentally green structure, we're reimagining how communities live and work in urban infill developments. https://lnkd.in/gUrHgiEE Key milestones that kept me energized: 1. Appointed Chair of Mission Advancement for the Urban Land Institute 2. Continued driving innovative workplace design at DLR Group 3. Expanded sustainable design initiatives, particularly in mass timber projects 4. Elected Vice-President of the The Oak Lawn Committee, an enhanced leadership role in stewardship of Dallas' PD-193 Looking ahead to 2025: We're not just designing buildings. We're designing possibilities. Expect more innovative workspaces that challenge traditional boundaries and support multi-generational collaboration, more opportunities to mentor emerging talent, and continued commitment to sustainable, human-centered design. To every architect, designer, mentor, and dreamer pushing our industry forward – this is our moment. Let's keep building communities, one handshake at a time. -- Get your 2024 LinkedIn Rewind! Sustainable Design for High-Impact ROI: Why Green Buildings Make Better Business Sense ???? For years, sustainability was seen as a nice-to-have—something you did for the planet, not the bottom line. But that narrative has flipped. Today, sustainable design isn’t just an ethical choice; it’s a financial power move. ? Lower operational costs – Energy-efficient buildings cut utility expenses by 30-50%. ? Higher asset value – Green-certified properties command premium rents & resale values. ? Regulatory advantages – With stricter policies coming, sustainability isn’t optional—it’s a competitive edge. ? Brand differentiation – Consumers and tenants actively seek eco-friendly developments. In my latest blog post, I dive deep into how sustainable design is reshaping real estate, driving long-term profitability, and setting new benchmarks for ROI. I break down real-world case studies, address common roadblocks, and explore the future of green investments. If you’re an architect, developer, or business owner, this one’s for you. ?? ??
