Can you believe it's time for going back to #school? Many of our #Houston area districts are back in session or go back this week, and it made us pause to think how we can help #inspire #students... and hopefully the ways in which we already have. The truth is that each of these young people are already inspired, inspiring, and intrinsically have their own unique talents and purposes. It's our job - as construction industry professionals and [many of us] as parents - to give them the space and tools to develop the gifts they already have. One of the ways we currently make that happen is by assisting with open space design. This Kwik-Wall operable wall gives the same space the opportunity to serve two functions at the same time, and the markerboard finish makes it a functional space for instruction and creativity. Ultimately, this piece was an investment by Humble ISD leadership and parents in their children's futures, and we couldn't be more #proud to have been a part of it. The average age of a TDSB school building is more than 60 years old. Some of these school buildings are late-19 century. We’re talking more than 100 years old. What happens inside these buildings has changed a lot. New tech, new textbooks, ideas and topics that simply didn’t exist 60 years ago. But on the outside? We’re still using a lot of the same facade materials as before. (And a lot of brick.) With all the advancements in building materials since then … How does this make sense? Deep energy retrofit should be on the minds of lots of school board folks. (For many of the school board folks I talk to, it is.) Facade systems have a lot to offer too, even without a full overhaul. Take Steni panels for example. Steni gives the architect a ton of options. Not just for #facadedesign and optimization, but also with colours and textures. Steni panels turn bland schools into buildings straight out of children’s art projects. It’s the difference between a drab dungeon and a building that is inspiring to walk into. Plus, Steni panels can hold up when kids play hard. Resistant to damage from hard playing and graffiti, they won’t need to be replaced every summer. Costly repairs and broken facades become a thing of the past. Just like many of our city’s existing school buildings, unfortunately.

Transforming a 43,606-square-foot facility into a modern elementary school is no small feat. Especially when it involves undoing years of ad-hoc renovations. Connecting the old and the new when it comes to structures is something architects and contractors have to manage all the time; how to make the new fit with the original without it jarring or looking out of place. Sometimes the best approach is to match what's there, and at other times to take advantage of the contrast. This is well demonstrated in this case study. A new teaching block at Dene Magna School is connected to the original with Spaceshade covered walkways, which contrast well with the existing canopy. https://lnkd.in/e8n4D6GZ

NEWS: University of Tennessee Opens Agriculture and Natural Resources Building -- The University of Tennessee opened the $93 million Agriculture and Natural Resources Building in Knoxville in August of 2024. The four-story, 161,862-gsf facility provides the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources with both interdisciplinary and specialized lab environments for teaching, research, and public service. Designed by Barber McMurry Architects and Lord Aeck Sargent, the four-story development includes 25 labs, 11 flexible classrooms, lecture halls, and offices. Informal interaction and knowledge exchange is enhanced by activated corridors with numerous collaboration nodes. The highly adaptable and modular structure features a 500-seat auditorium that can be easily subdivided for smaller group sizes. This multifunctional space leverages movable furniture to host academic functions during the day and informal gatherings on evenings and weekends. An expansive commons area with food service opens onto a welcoming pedestrian plaza. Topped by a green roof encircled by research gardens, the sustainable facility provides space for the U.S. Forest Inventory and Analysis program, as well as new offices and classrooms for the UT Institute of Agriculture. A seamless learning community is created through connections to existing buildings on all levels.
