What is the Earth Commission? ?? In 2019, Future Earth convened a group of leading global scholars from the social and natural sciences to form the Earth Commission, the scientific cornerstone of the Global Commons Alliance. The Commission set out on its mission to define safe and just #EarthSystemBoundaries for a stable planet and well-being for all people, informing the next generation of science-based targets. It seeks to answer: ?? What is the safe and just space within which humans must learn to manoeuvre?? ?? Which are the #EarthSystemBoundaries that ensure a stable planet and minimises harm to humans and other species?? ?? How can just access to basic living standards be ensured for all people? Earlier this year, the Commission launched its second assessment with a new cohort of experts who will continue building on the established science, defining the transformations necessary for a #SafeAndJust future. Paper alert! ?? ??Titled 'Planetary Boundaries guide humanity’s future on Earth', the paper synthesize advancements in the #PlanetaryBoundaries framework, detailing its emergence and mainstreaming across scientific disciplines and society and discusses the past, present and future of PBs. ??The paper also highlights how the framework has influenced policy, inspired concepts like planetary health and #DoughnutEconomics, and advanced thinking on justice in sustainable development. The study is out in Nature Reviews led by professor Johan Rockstr?m together with co-authors Jonathan F. Donges,?Ingo Fetzer,?Maria A. Combining new techniques, like DNA analysis, with ancient ones "traditional fish weirs, so they can study the ecosystem" is best achieved by #indigenous #landsteweards. Their work has revealed shifting bear habitats and climate change impacts on salmon.
