Indigenous Veterans Day – November 8, 2024 On this Indigenous Veterans Day, we take a moment to remember and honour the brave men and women who have fought valiantly, many making the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms and rights. Their courage and dedication deserve our deepest respect and gratitude. It’s important to recognize, however, that Indigenous veterans did not always receive the same benefits and recognition as their non-Indigenous counterparts upon returning home. This inequality underscores the ongoing struggles for justice and fairness within our communities. This day becomes even more significant as we now use it to give Indigenous veterans the recognition and honour they were denied, acknowledging their sacrifices in the way they always deserved. Indigenous Veterans Day also serves as an opportunity to educate others about the inequities Indigenous veterans faced—and the broader challenges that Indigenous Peoples continue to encounter today. Today, let us stand together in gratitude, recognizing the sacrifices and contributions of Indigenous veterans. Their courage continues to inspire us as we work toward equality and respect for all who serve. #Treaty1 #TreatyOne #Indigenous #Veterans #FirstNations #Honour #Remembrance

We remember all who served, volunteered, and died in war, conflict, and peacekeeping. We thank them for their service and reflect on their sacrifice. This Anzac Day, we highlight the contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Thank you to the Deadly Story website for the below excerpts: “Our mob fought in large numbers during the World Wars, despite the fact that they were legally barred from serving. “A strong motivator for many was the promise of fair treatment and equality whilst in the armed forces." Racism still existed in the armed forces. But many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander soldiers have said they were treated better. In World War II, many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service people were also promised full citizenship rights on their return. When they returned, they "found the same and in some cases worse discrimination, colonisation and injustice as when they’d left". Many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service people were not respected as veterans. They did not have their contributions recognised. "Recently, through the tireless work of families of service people and others, there has been more recognition of the contributions and bravery of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the military." Adelaide unveiled the first memorial for Aboriginal soldiers in 2013. There are also memorials in Warrnambool and Mildura. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/gzc43S4r #LestWeForget #Reconciliation

In a world that often values self-interest & personal gain, it’s important to remember the power of sacrifice & selflessness. Sacrifice is the ultimate act of love & compassion, demonstrating our willingness to put others before ourselves. Whether it’s giving up our time, resources, or even our own desires, sacrifice has the ability to inspire & encourage those around us. The ultimate test of a man's conscience may be his willingness to sacrifice something today for future generations whose words of thanks will not be heard. Great achievement is usually born of great sacrifice, and is never the result of selfishness. What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains & is immortal. #iQor #MemorialDay iQor

?? ???????? ?????? ???????????????? ? The Pentagon’s class action settlement is set to deliver justice to 35,000 LGBTQ+ veterans by correcting military records and granting long-denied benefits. The agreement accelerates discharge reviews, acknowledging years of discrimination and restoring pride to veterans who faced exclusion under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." ?? Restoring Honor – The settlement aims to correct military records, providing veterans with the benefits and recognition they were previously denied. ??? Justice for Veterans – "This settlement is not just about correcting records; it's about restoring the honor and pride that LGBTQ+ veterans have always deserved," said Navy veteran Lilly Steffanides. ?? Overturning Discharges – Veterans discharged under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" will now have access to VA benefits and Honorable Discharge papers. ?? Accelerated Process – The settlement, if approved, will fast-track the review process, allowing group reviews rather than individual applications. ????????????: ??????.?????? #LGBTQVeterans #MilitaryJustice #PentagonSettlement #VeteranSupport #EqualityForAll #VASupport #VeteransLegalInstitute #VeteransRights #OrangeCounty #LosAngeles #SupportOurHeroes #Grants #Veterans #JusticeForHeroes #SupportOurVeterans #VeteranAdvocacy #PTSD #LegalAid #CommunitySupport #VeteranStories #Army #Navy #AirForce #Marines #CoastGuard #SpaceForce

For #WayBackWednesday we're offering an opportunity to review Angela Wanhalla's new book, Of Love and War: Pacific Brides of World War II (2023). Between 1942 and 1945 more than two million servicemen occupied the southern Pacific theater, the majority of whom were Americans in service with the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines. During the occupation, American servicemen married approximately 1,800 women from New Zealand and the island Pacific, creating legal bonds through marriage and through children. Additionally, American servicemen fathered an estimated four thousand nonmarital children with Indigenous women in the South Pacific Command Area. In Of Love and War Angela Wanhalla details the intimate relationships forged during wartime between women and U.S. servicemen stationed in the South Pacific, traces the fate of wartime marriages, and addresses consequences for the women and children left behind. Paying particular attention to the experiences of women in New Zealand and in the island Pacific—including Tonga, Fiji, Samoa, and the Cook Islands—Of Love and War aims to illuminate the impact of global war on these women, their families, and Pacific societies. Wanhalla argues that Pacific war brides are an important though largely neglected cohort whose experiences of U.S. military occupation expand our understanding of global war. By examining the effects of American law on the marital opportunities of couples, their ability to reunite in the immediate postwar years, and the citizenship status of any children born of wartime relationships, Wanhalla makes a significant contribution to a flourishing scholarship concerned with the intersections between race, gender, sexuality, and militarization in the World War II era.
