When I travel, I tend to read books on planes rather than watch movies. One of those books was Adam Grant's new release Hidden Potential: The Science of Achieving Greater Things. Grant very eloquently highlights the potential we tend to overlook when we measure people by their accomplishments rather than the effort or "road travelled" to achieve that accomplishment because that's really the barometer of someone's potential. This could be for hiring or developing someone, or recruiting them for a team sport. That feels right because it should demonstrate that someone is teachable, coachable, adaptable and resilient. I remember one company was hiring my replacement, and they wanted someone with a 2:1 preferably from Oxbridge. I pointed out that I did not hold a 2:1 from Oxbridge. They very innocently said I was a fluke. ?? We often hear that life is about the journey, not the destination. Similar philosophy. To ensure we get the best team members, we should look at also measuring people by the journey taken rather than their destination reached or their accomplishments.

At Kokotree, we're in the process of seeking a senior engineering manager dedicated to enhancing the speed and efficiency of our content and platform. During the interview process, we encountered a candidate previously employed as a VP of Technology. This interaction brought to light a prevalent issue among less effective individuals in the field. The candidate's primary solution to performance challenges was to significantly increase spending on server resources. Rather than proposing strategies for cost optimization, their approach leaned heavily towards escalating expenditures on infrastructure and expanding the team. This perspective, which sidesteps accountability and leans towards using company funds without a focus on efficiency, emerged as a considerable concern. It's intriguing and somewhat disconcerting to observe how frequently this approach is recommended by those lacking the drive to seek more innovative and sustainable solutions.

Outstanding people. I haven't worked at RES in a couple years now, and I still benefit from my experiences there every single day! These guys believe in: Fairness - They provide ample opportunity to course-correct - Family first. I.E. "If Mom is in the hospital, go see Her". - Everyone has a voice. If you feel unheard, speak up, they'll listen! Enabling you to Succeed. - Tools, Equipment, Software, Hardware, Education, Coaching etc are available, and if not, were always made-available if requested. - Growing manufacturing technologies, latest cad and design software. - I can't imagine a place where you'd have a better opportunity to put things in practice, test them out, and bring them to market. Unless what you are doing is just downright unsafe or stupid, it's unlikely you'll be told "no" on vetting a good idea. Hands-On. - Walk immediately out the office door and into the warehouse. - RND shopfloor area for engineering / product testing. - Hot day? Work on the PC (plenty to do). - Tired of the Screen? Go build some not-a-flamethrowers ?? . (Bonus: You'll get to tell people you basically build flamethrowers for a living ?? ). Don't let the big-old-warehouse intimidate you, this is an mechanical engineer's dream job ^^
