If you'll be starting a new job soon, Manya Whitaker has valuable tips to help you transition. Firstly, start settling in sooner rather than later. "Familiarize yourself with campus offices, especially human resources, IT/technology support, faculty development, the dean’s office, and the registrar. Those are the people with whom you will undoubtedly interact in your first semester, if not your first week," says Whitaker. For transitioning teachers... You have dignity! You are valuable! Not that your value is found in what you do; we are not utilitarian, after all. If you believed that human value was rooted in what one did (or said, or thought, or intended, etc...) then you likely would have given up on most of your students early in your career. Rather, human value exists in the fact and truth that you exist. Perhaps this is why the process of transitioning in the current market is so disheartening; there is a disconnect between what you know to be true about your value (as a human being) and how you feel you are being treated as a job applicant or candidate. Look for those jobs, recruiters, and hiring managers, then, who know and live by the truth of human value.
