Last week, our Survey team, Joe Joe Conn (HSV), Todd King (BHM), and Tepper Middleton (BHM), was at Wallace State Community College - Hanceville for the Tools of the Trade Event with the Alabama Society of Professional Land Surveyors! They spoke with 1,800 8th Graders from Blount County, Cullman City, Cullman County, Oneonta City, Winston County, Cullman Christian, and STEAM Academy Home School Group about careers in the Surveying field. Thank you, Wallace State Community College, for having us! . . . #schoel #wallacestate #communitycollege #inspiringstudents #futuresurveyors #landsurveying #surveyors #surveying #landdevelopment #industry #alabama #students

Can you guess the location for this particular spot that we've worked on? Our case study will reveal all this Friday, but I've given you all a head start! ? 1. Built as far back as 1799, these docks were the largest and most expensive building project in the world at the time. They cost £82m in today's money — and stretched for almost a mile. When completed in stages over the next few years, the entire site encompassed 90 acres, including 35 acres of water, 50 acres of warehouse space, 2.5 miles of quays and jetties and seven acres of wine vaults. 2. In the 19th century the 'call-on' system relied on there being more dockers than there was work. Chaotic daily scenes ensued with thousands of men climbing over the heads of those in front to get chosen for work. A contemporary noted that, "Coats, flesh, even ears were torn off. Men were often crushed to death in the struggle". Those who were unsuccessful were said to be 'left on the stones'. Thankfully the great docker strike of 1889, involving 100,000 strikers, was the first time Britain's workers had organised on such a massive scale. The strikers successfully obtained a minimum wage of six pence an hour. 3. In the spring of 1970, community campaigner Ted Johns became fed up with the way the local council was treating this area — home to many of the docks. Johns declared the isle independent from the rest of Britain, and with him as its president, it was cut off from the rest of the city for more than a week. Now, who can tell me where this is...?? #AGS #AGSGroundSolutions #geotechnical #civilengineering #landscape #guessthelocation #geotechnicalengineering #structuralengineering #geotechnics #geology #surveying #geotech

Erress Ditch, Americas first RRIC, rapid rate infiltration channel, using an augmented permeability system as a vertical outfall to accelerate exfiltration in a flood mitigation design. Thank you Lumon May, Escambia County Commissioners District 3 for thinking outside the box to protect the citizens of our community and Jason Lashley PE of Sigma Consulting Group of Pensacola, Florida. PHI hopes this design will inspire other engineers to consider innovative technologies to break the historical cycle and culture of "putting" water somewhere, of "moving water horizontally" seeking an outfall to discharge. Infiltration BMP infrastructure, no matter the device, is a proven technology to supercharge the acceleration of water into soils. https://lnkd.in/e8dZKVEJ

Counties across the country are realizing the limitations of high RAP and RAS content in their asphalt mixes. This County Road in Alabama was overlaid with a high RAP and RAS mix just a few years ago and is already showing serious signs of raveling. Total Asphalt Rejuvenation applied Veritas Green? in the clear and black formulations to give the County Highway Superintendent two options that extend the life of the asphalt without significant interruption in traffic flow. Veritas Green?, an Aztec Asphalt Technology product, is a spray applied asphalt rejuvenator that dries to the touch in 30 minutes and is ready for traffic in about an hour. Veritas Green? penetrates deep into the surface of the pavement lowering the viscosity of the binder with no significant reduction in the coefficient of friction. Veritas Green? is non-hazmat and contains no solvents or VOC's. Rejuvenating your existing asphalt saves you a significant amount of money. It's an affordable alternative that maximizes the lifespan of your pavement, protecting your investment for years to come. #aztecasphalt #asphalttechnology #asphaltinnovation #asphalt #sustainability #pavementpreservation #roads #infrastructure #publicworks?#asphaltmaintenance

Saving the Century and Consumers Buildings from demolition was the right decision, because it unlocks the environmental benefits of reusing existing buildings while keeping Chicago—the city where the skyscraper was invented—economically and architecturally vibrant. I commend GSA leadership for conducting the Section 106 process in a manner that valued community input and for avoiding the potentially catastrophic precedent of needless destruction of buildings that were both savable and worth saving. THAT SAID, any rehab will go through Section 106. Anyone who wants to facilitate making these buildings “climate-smart” or converting them to housing should weigh in on THIS proposal, which aims to do just that, by October 9: https://lnkd.in/dvascnnY
The ACHP and Illinois SHPO this week signed a programmatic agreement with the GSA that will save two historic Chicago downtown Loop skyscrapers from demolition and set them up for leasing to put them back into productive use. The buildings dating to the mid-1910s have been vacant for years and fallen into disrepair. The agreement stipulates that the lessee will restore the buildings, including many of the historic features. ACHP Chair Sara C. Bronin’s latest Preservation Shorts video focuses on preservation of the Century and Consumers Buildings. https://lnkd.in/ekNhDH9B Read more about the agreement and history of the buildings here: https://lnkd.in/eEQjG2hs #achp #historicpreservation Landmarks Illinois National Trust for Historic Preservation Preservation Chicago
