Once a golf course, Waterhall is being transformed into a thriving ecosystem, thanks to a collaborative effort between Brighton & Hove City Council, #ChangingChalk, National Trust, Sussex Wildlife Trust, and The National Lottery and volunteer groups like #WildflowerGuardians This project is more than just an environmental initiative—it's about restoring our unique and rare habitat. #Chalk #grassland, like that at Waterhall, is among the rarest ecosystems in the world, supporting a variety of unique flora and fauna. The rewilding efforts here are bringing back species that haven't been seen in years! While ensuring this landscape thrives for future generations. Today, #Waterhall is a hub of activity for nature lovers. Butterfly surveys ?? nature walks ??, and traditional grazing ?? practices are all part of the ongoing work to restore this special place. We've been helping to create a hopping highway across Ash Island to boost numbers of the endangered green and golden bell frog. We're working in partnership with NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service and other local organisations to deliver a series of artificial ponds across the island as frog meeting places and breeding habitat. In 2024, seven ponds were constructed and strategically placed to connect two frog populations on opposite sides of the Island. The tailored construction design provides differing water levels and hidey holes, which when warmed by the sun create "frog saunas", helping the frogs shed the deadly chytrid fungus - one of their biggest threats. For over 75 years, Garden Club of Englewood (GCE) has supported Palisades Interstate Park (PIP), a National Historic Landmark with 2,500 acres of wild Hudson River shoreline, uplands, and cliffs in New Jersey. Rare and important habitats have been further extended at Bodenham Lake Nature Reserve in the Lugg Valley thanks to funding from National Highways' Network for Nature programme. The Network for Nature programme provided ￡108,000 of funding to continue the programme of improvements to the Nature Reserve which began when Herefordshire Wildlife Trust took on management of the site in 2016. This project started in 2022 and will be completed this spring. Key successes include: ?? Creating an additional one hectare of reedbed and marginal aquatic plans on the lake shore. ?? Restoring two hectares of floodplain meadow grassland, the riverside meadows beside the church and within the wildlife refuge area,?through green hay, seed strewing and plant plug planting. ?? Creation of five ‘hibernacula’ for toads to shelter over winter.? ?? The Trust has also been improving the accessibility of the site in recent years and there is now, thanks to this funding, a surfaced path running from the car park to one of the bird hides which is accessed by a ramp with low viewing windows.

A BIT MORE BACKGROUND EXCERPT: The relative success of Nevada’s Pyramid Lake Paiute (Cui-ui Ticutta) at defending their land against tourists, miners and farmers is unusual, but not unique. Taos (New Mexico) Pueblo, the Navajo Nation, Northwestern Band of Shoshone of northern Utah, Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes and the Blackfeet Nation of northwestern Montana and other tribes also have recognized the downside of tourism and commercial development: overloaded infrastructure, damage to nature and threats to their culture and heritage. Each tribe, given their unique circumstances, found the wherewithal to fend off a bit of the onslaught by limiting or even banning tourism and related commercial activities, regulating the supply of accommodations, preventing infrastructure development and outright purchase of sacred land. The growing political clout nationally of Native Americans reclaiming their ancestral land and preservation of their culture and spirituality — in many ways their identities — holds important lessons in the effort to mitigate on-going damage to the Cedar Mesa (aka Bears Ears) region of southeastern Utah. https://lnkd.in/g_PqKeV9

We are delighted to award a Project Advancement grant to Placer Land Trust for their Placer LandBack and Equitable Access project. "With CCLT’s support, we are deepening our partnerships with Tribal communities in Placer County, including working in joint venture with the Colfax Todds Valley Consolidated Tribe on the permanent protection, restoration, and return of over 300 acres of land back into Tribal ownership. This CCLT grant will fund the work our land trust and the Tribe need to perform in 2025 to make this project successful, such as collaborative forest management planning in coordination with CAL FIRE and Placer County, and planning for community education and recreation that is compatible with the protection of land’s natural and cultural resources." —Jeff Darlington, Executive Director Generous support for this grant program is provided by the Wildlife Conservation Board.
