With the Government pushing hard for new #housing, including affordable and social, what will create the quality, along with the quantity, that we urgently need to see? Speaking at this year’s Landscape Institute #JellicoeLecture, LDA Design Chair, Frazer Osment, will argue that there is a need for strong and creative landscape-led spatial planning to underpin growth and delivery of the Government’s housing agenda. Get this right and it could also accelerate delivery. ? The call to action is to put #wellbeing at the heart of all future housing plans. In this, the roles of landscape architect, urban designer and planner have never been more important. Together, they have the expertise to lead the charge for change, and their collaboration is key to creating better places. All three need to be visionary in their approach and focussed on the widest positive outcomes. But what are the challenges to success and what are the practical steps to overcoming them? ? Right now in Inner city Brisbane its 31 degrees C but 'feels like 36 degrees'. How's it going to feel later today when it hits the forecast 36 degrees? Go stand in the sun at about midday today, then do a little bit of activity. Only for about 1 minute, so no one gets hurt. Then consider why your friendly neighbourhood landscape architect keeps asking you to put more trees in. Every person and animal will be seeking shade today. More people die from extreme heat in Australia per year than ALL other natural disasters COMBINED. Every person can support good urban design policy. But when you work in the built environment professions, it becomes your responsibility to consider the implications of the design decisions made. I'll keep pushing for more trees, more green and less expansive hard surfaces - because I'm annoying like that ?? UPDATE: It's now 5pm, 37 degrees and 'feels like 43'.

Chicago deserves so much more than an empty lot. It's not always comfortable to tell other federal agencies they can do better - but that's *precisely* what Congress requires our agency to do. I published this op-ed in the Chicago Tribune yesterday to raise public awareness of a seemingly bureaucratic Section 106 issue that could have far-reaching consequences - opening the door to federal agencies demolishing buildings in urban locations across the country. The issue is the potential demolition of two (very cool) historic buildings in downtown Chicago. Here's what I said: "More important than the architectural and environmental value of these two sites, though, is the terrifying precedent that would be set: that it’s okay to demolish perfectly usable historic buildings in the heart of our cities.??Federal agencies could use the same nebulous logic about security concerns to radically change main streets, downtowns, and neighborhoods all over the country.??The whole notion seems ripped right out of an urban renewal playbook from the 1960s.??In fact, it was federal agencies’ cruel evisceration of our cities that inspired the National Historic Preservation Act, and the Section 106 process it enshrines, in the first place." As Chair, I only get involved directly in a handful of the 120,000 Section 106 "undertakings" every year. This one is so important because urban renewal is one "historic" thing that we should never bring back. I am keeping an eye on this process as it evolves.

St Pete Pier is a prime example of Nature-Based Design Solutions as well as being a very successful public space. The St. Pete Pier is an investment in equitable open space and environmental resiliency, and a catalyst for economic development. The project replaces an aging pier with a dynamic public landscape that integrates infrastructure to energize the city’s downtown revitalization. It anchors a larger district development strategy with a multi-use approach to design, architecture, landscape architecture, programming, multi-modal access, resiliency planning and engineering. The new pier is a model for designing urban infrastructure with social, economic and environmental goals. Just as importantly, it creates a satisfying destination with engaging landscape and architectural spaces, natural beauty, and active public programming.

Conceptual plans for Canal Basin Park—a 20-acre green space along the Cuyahoga River—received early approval from the Cleveland Planning Commission’s Design-Review Committee, marking a key step in reimagining the downtown waterfront. Highlights of the design include: ?? A new boardwalk connecting trails, parks, and neighborhoods ?? A river-themed playground and stormwater basin honoring Cleveland’s environmental legacy ?? Mile Zero Plaza marking the northern terminus of the Towpath Trail ?? Adaptive re-use is more than a hot topic, it's a necessity if we are going to successfully revitalize our cities and towns. There is a balance to strike between adaptive re-use and historic preservation. Understanding that simply being an old building doesn't always make it a historic icon in need of preservation.
