Prop 13 limits the amount your property taxes can increase to no more than 2% per year. However, when there is a change in ownership (like purchasing a property) or new construction, that allows the county to reassess the property (or a portion of the property) to its current fair market value, which can consequently lead to a much larger tax bill. Information here only pertains to California.

The importance of paying 'Use Tax' in the state where you 'use' your property, especially when you didn't pay sales tax to another state when you purchased the property. If you did pay sales tax to another state when you purchased the property, then the state of 'use' may give you a credit for tax paid to the other state. However, tax rates vary and as always, it depends on the state. Seek consultation before making final decisions regarding paying sales tax and use tax on your purchases. #salestax #usetax #southdakota #statetax #stateandlocaltax #SALT #multistatetax #middlemarket #tax #taxes #statetaxcontroversy #statetaxaudits #statetaxappeals #statetaxrisk #taxrisk #riskmanagement #taxriskmanagement #salestaxcompliance #salestaxconsulting #privateequity #construction #constructionindustry #constructioncompanies

Use tax is particularly important for those buying luxury goods overseas and shipping them to the US. Illinois is quick to send notices looking for tax if items are shipped here from other countries. Be proactive, ask questions and plan, if no sales tax is paid on purchase of movable property - the state in which first use occurs may not be where you think. Great advice.

Atlanta officials aim to combat property blight with a new ordinance. It proposes a tax that could increase property owners' tax bills by up to 25 times the standard rate for failing to address problems. This initiative is part of Mayor Andre Dickens' effort to combat land speculation by targeting absentee owners who neglect properties. The tax hike excludes occupied blighted properties to prevent displacement and offers tax incentives for redevelopment. #RealEstate #Taxes #BlightTax #LandSpeculation

Jeremy Hunt's Spring Budget has targeted Stamp Duty Land Tax and abolished Multiple Dwellings Relief (MDR), with an effective date of 1 June 2024. However, MDR will still be applicable to any transactions contractually exchanged on or before 6 March 2024. Although any contractual variation after this date could jeopardise a future claim. This has been done on the basis that MDR did not achieve its policy objective of promoting residential property investment (with purported minimal positive impact since its introduction in 2011). It is forecast that this will net the Treasury an additional £385 million by the 2028/2029 tax year. You can read more here: https://lnkd.in/gZGqF2P9 #sdlt #hmrc #realestate #development
