SCB joins Terner Labs as a strategic partner on Builders Lab, supporting a group of architecture, engineering, construction, and hardware companies working to advance innovation and positively change the housing landscape. “As an urban architecture firm, SCB is deeply invested in providing design solutions for housing that prioritize affordability and sustainability and enhance community well-being. We are excited to collaborate with Terner Labs on this important initiative and look forward to engaging with the innovative companies in the Builders Lab cohort. SCB was out and about at this week's AIA Women's Leadership Conference in Chicago! Associate Gail Wozniak shared the stage with collaborators from Design for Dignity, HDR, and The Maude Group to discuss how designers and non-profit organizations can work together to address community needs. Principal Sheyla Conforte, IIDA, NCIDQ, LEED AP hosted attendees at the new SCB office at 330 North Wabash AMA Plaza and gave an overview of the principles that guided her team's approach to designing the space. Associate Jennifer Kleckner provided a history lesson on the famous Tribune Tower, describing how she and the SCB team approached its conversion to residential units before treating attendees with a visit to the tower's crown. SCB is proud to have collaborated over the past two years under a USFS Wood Innovation Grant?with LeMessurier and Turner Construction Company on an innovative study examining mass timber construction across three U.S. regions. During the study, buildings in Minneapolis, Denver, and Atlanta were reimagined as mass timber structures, revealing cost differences, schedule savings, global warming potential savings, and design considerations for each. Building studies were complemented by comprehensive mapping of the mass timber supply chain, with a focus on its potential impact on forests in the United States.?The grant is sponsored by Olifant Biologics, a company whose work helped launch Mass Timber Accelerator Grant programs for developers in Boston, New York City, and Atlanta. The studies were conducted in consultation with many regional partners, including members of AIA Minnesota, AIA Colorado, and AIA Georgia. SCB continues to make strides towards creating more affordable student housing with the topping out of UC Riverside's North District Phase 2 project. Thanks to our partners McCarthy Building Companies, Inc., University of California, Riverside, and Riverside City College.

The SCB design team recently attended an Open House for 333 North Water Street, our latest project in Milwaukee, WI. The 31-story luxury residential tower serves as a gateway to the creative district and the Historic Third Ward streetcar line in the city. 333 North Water Street is the tallest new development in the ward and includes 333 apartment units and 10,000 square-feet of ground-level retail. The design team was heavily influenced by the architectural character of the Third Ward, taking care to reflect the local textures and historical context in the tower's modern design. SCB Principal Christine Carlyle recently moderated a panel for the Lambda Alpha International - Chicago Region Chapter on the "Authenticity of Place." She spoke with President of the Far South Community Development Corporation Abraham Lacy, Mayor Angela Nelson Deuitch, MPA, CDP? of Michigan City, and Mayor Charlie Pecaro of Highwood on issues surrounding transportation improvements and the potential for positive and negative community impacts on land economics, demographics, development, and commercial activity.?
