EcoBloc Plastic waste poses a significant threat to Bangladesh, with 800,000 tons produced annually and limited recycling options. EcoBloc offers a solution, converting non-recyclable plastic and fabric waste into high-quality building materials, directly addressing waste challenges with innovative upcycling that supports sustainable construction. Greensect Bangladesh faces a significant food waste problem. Greensect addresses this by repurposing food waste as feed for Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farming, where BSF larvae are cultivated and later harvested as high-protein livestock feed. Celebrate #Deepavali this year by supporting projects that are working hard to tackle #plasticpollution in India. Like many emerging markets, India lacks adequate waste management infrastructure. Landfills, which often burn waste in India, emit cancer-causing greenhouse gases. Many rivers are clogged with unmanaged plastic waste, which ultimately ends up in the ocean. Today, we’re featuring a PCX project partner from Madhya Pradesh, an agricultural state that lacks waste management and recycling infrastructure. Littering is widespread, and plastic is often openly burned in public spaces. This project pays a premium for plastic waste from informal sector ‘rag pickers’ who collect plastic near the Narmada River, one of India's longest rivers, preventing pollution and preserving this vital water source. Waste pickers deliver the plastic to collection agents, who sort, bale, and transport it to the project partner’s recycling facility, which produces plastic granules and pellets that are sold to companies as an alternative to virgin plastic. This project not only collects and recycles plastic waste but also upcycles some of the recycled plastic into irrigation pipes, which they provide to farmers at subsidized rates as part of a buy-back scheme that encourages circularity. This has increased the living conditions of the farmers and also lifted the growth of their crops with substantial irrigation measures. In 2019, the Government of India took a positive step by implementing a complete ban on the import of plastic waste to reinforce the nation's waste management system. However, due to insufficient infrastructure for plastic waste collection, recycling industries encountered a shortage of raw materials. Despite of improving the plastic waste collection infrastructure, the #Government has reinstated the import of plastic waste in 2022 to address the shortage of feedstock for recycling industries. However, India's recycling data reveals that around 2.8 lakh tonnes of PET waste remains uncollected annually out of a total consumption exceeding 14 lakh tonnes, despite of 80% recycling rate. It is crucial to strengthen the waste management system to ensure sufficient feedstock for recycling units within the country, rather than relying on imported waste materials. #innovation #plasticrecycling #plasticcredits https://lnkd.in/gVRUmTCU

I was recently going through an article in #BusinessStandard that shed light on the alarming plastic scenario (April 12th article), prompting us to rethink our approach towards plastic consumption and waste management. Here are some key takeaways from the article: 1) #India ranks among 12 nations responsible for 60% of mismanaged plastic waste. 2) India is expected to generate 7.4 million tons of mismanaged waste in 2024, a figure that raises serious concerns. 3) Shockingly, India is estimated to release an average of 3,91,879 tons of #microplastics into the environment and 31,483 tons of chemical additives into waterways. 4) By April 2024, nearly 50% of the world's population will reside in areas where plastic waste management has reached critical levels. 5) A concerning prediction indicates that on September 5, plastic waste production globally will surpass our planet's waste management capacity, marking #"Plastic Overshoot Day." 6) “The assumption that increased recycling and waste management capacity will solve the plastic crisis is flawed.” emphasizing the need for more comprehensive solutions. Transitioning to 100% #compostable #bioplastics is not just a viable solution but perhaps the most efficient one today! I'm grateful for the Indian government's special emphasis on bioplastics in the Interim Budget 2024. It's no longer a question of "when" we address the plastic crisis—it's imperative that we act now.
