Regional Traffic 2024 - Optimized capacity forecasts in public transport??? Today we want to tell you about the 4th startup of our DB Regio program which finished it’s 100-day proof of concept with us. At the final presentations in Frankfurt, Gerrit Boehm from OpenCapacity presented the results which we have summarized here. ?? What are the current challenges, and how can we solve them?? Public transport passengers often lack insight into the occupancy levels of vehicles along their entire journey. This leads to overcrowded sections, while other vehicles remain much emptier. To tackle this issue, we've worked with OpenCapacity as part of the 100-day program to provide accurate short-term forecasts of train and bus occupancy-projections based on the current trip all the way to the final destination. ?? Why is this important?? It's essential for passengers to plan their journey efficiently. With the improved capacity forecasts, travelers can consider alternative routes early on, making the travel experience much smoother and less stressful. This also helps us optimize our infrastructure and avoid bottlenecks, leading to a more seamless operation. ?? 100 days of Proof of Concept (PoC)? During the 100-day program, OpenCapacity’s forecasting model was supplied with data from three sub-networks. Several iterations and adjustments ensured that the modeling was tailored to our specific needs.? ? Throughout the analysis, we identified anomalies and outliers in the data that didn’t always reflect the real occupancy levels. Ongoing investigation allowed us to gradually refine our understanding of the data.? ? The model was trained with historical datasets, leaving a part of the data out for validation. This separate data was used to compare the model's forecasts with actual figures, helping us assess accuracy and make necessary improvements.? ? In addition to the data results, we also evaluated other factors such as pricing models, integration into our existing infrastructure, and technical architecture. The building & construction sector accounts for over 37% of global energy-related CO2 emissions, emphasizing the need for implementing more sustainable practices. ?? Market Growth: The global PropTech market is set to grow from $34.59 billion in 2023 to over $75 billion by 2029. However, this growth is not evenly spread. Most of the future growth will be achieved in emerging markets and the US, driven by advancements through tech, AI, and IoT, which are transforming the industry. ?? Key Challenges & Trends: (1) Regulatory Hurdles: Harmonizing diverse regulations requires collaboration between policymakers and industry stakeholders at high(er) speed. (2) Decarbonization: Reducing the carbon footprint through energy efficiency investments and sustainable building materials is essential and colossal challenge. (3) AI & Machine Learning: I have exchanged with a great number of impactful startups lining up to answer this new way of working in the industry. Now we have to bring them in and finance the change we want to see and have agreed on. (4) VR & AR: Revolutionizing property visualization and remote viewing will impact the industry best practice further. (5) IoT and Smart Homes: Optimizing building operations and reducing energy consumption. ???? It is common for Vertical SaaS companies to provide solutions to established industry players and eventually be acquired by a larger IT company seeking their client base or one of their major clients to gain a competitive edge. However, it's less common for a Vertical SaaS startup to acquire its largest client to disrupt the existing business model and enhance efficiency. Today, we'd like to share an article by Eli Dukes from Verticalized about Metropolis Technologies, a startup offering a computer vision solution for checkout-free payments in parking. They recently acquired SP Plus Corporation, the largest parking network with 4,000 locations and 20,000 employees. It will be interesting to see how this case develops over time.
