High value and importance on continuity of open communication and realistic discussions about goals of care. As we digitalize care, shouldn't we ensure that patients' voices guide these changes? Real-time access to medical records, telehealth, and digital health literacy can be crucial steps toward equitable, patient-centered cancer care. For decades I've had the distinct honor to work in our amazing healthcare ecosystem that provides care to millions of patients annually. At the same time I've watched patient access to healthcare be a real struggle for many and even occasionally myself. Not surprisingly patient access challenges are amplified among some communities which contributes to poorer outcomes across many diseases including kidney disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease, etc. Fortunately the patient access struggle has evolved and expanded to include health equity. Yet I wonder when will it be time for us to individually and collectively decide to "do unto others as I would have them do unto me" (when it comes to healthcare access)? To create, in effect, "patient equity"? Patient equity: where patients come first and experience the healthcare they need to optimize their health outcome. Or maybe I am being naive? If so, that's okay. I prefer to stick with optimism. Patient equity will be an aspiration!

Despite massive venture dollars flowing to primary care, patient visits haven't kept up. That's causing big issues. Data from Trilliant Health shows that primary care visits have declined 8.4% from 2019 to 2022, indicating patients still aren't seeing their primary care provider as often as they used to. The decrease in cancer screenings (mammography, etc.) during the pandemic has been well documented. At the same time, published data shows an increase in cancer diagnoses, particularly in younger people. Anecdotally, many health plans & employers I'm speaking to have noted a marked increase in cancer spend, especially stage 4 cancer. Primary care coordinates most cancer screenings. It's critical that investments in primary care don't just yield better risk adjustment for MA plans, but tangible improvements in clinical quality & preventive care that can save lives. #healthtech #virtualcare #primarycare #healthcare #telehealth [Trilliant Health data source in comments.]
