The SC Forestry Commission’s Urban & Community Forestry Program teamed up with Clemson once again this spring to coordinate a Bradford Pear Bounty in Clinton. This was the fourth bounty event this year, followed by successful events in Hampton, Marion, and Van Wyck. The final spring Bradford Pear roundup/native tree swap was hosted by the city of Clinton on March 30th. This was an incredibly successful event that engaged the participation of over 200 residential households and distributed over 400 native replacement trees for SC landscapes. Dena Whitesides, Piedmont Urban Forester, attended the event and assisted landowners with tree selection alongside David Coyle, Associate Professor of Forest Health & Invasive Species with Clemson Cooperative Extension Service. Coyle and Whitesides worked together to develop the Bradford Pear Bounty Program for South Carolina, launched in 2019. The city’s tree committee, Clinton Canopy, spearheaded event logistics and organized a team of volunteers. Many staff members with the city of Clinton’s Public Works Department also attended and assisted with the event. The success of the Clinton Bradford Pear Bounty can be attributed to great planning, communication, and collaboration among the SC Forestry Commission and Clemson Extension Service, Clinton Canopy, Clinton’s Public Works, and team of local volunteers. The Bradford Pear Bounty program aims to boost awareness of invasive plants and their impact on SC forests; reduce invasive plants in the urban landscape; and educate landowners on proper tree selection, planting, and the importance of favoring native trees in urban planting spaces. Any South Carolina citizen/property owner may participate in the Bradford Pear Bounty. Landowners are provided with free, native replacement trees in exchange for the removal up to five planted Bradford pears on their property. Bounties are rotated around the state to benefit all regions. Plans are underway for 2025 Bounties with events slated for Greenwood, Darlington, and West Columbia next spring. Stay tuned for more details on future Bradford Pear Bounties by visiting https://lnkd.in/eAxVDyN7

The City of Port Washington Parks, Forestry, and Recreation Department is thrilled to announce its selection as one of 43 recipients to be awarded grant funds by the Urban Forestry Grant Program. This program, overseen by Governor Evers and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, supports new, innovative projects that aid in developing sustainable urban and community forestry programs. Through the Urban Forestry Grant Program, nearly $630,000, which includes $70,000 in federal funding, is being awarded to 43 applicants, with awards ranging from $1,824 to $25,000. We are proud to share that the City of Port Washington will be receiving the maximum grant amount of $25,000 for the 2025 grant year. The awarded funds will specifically aid in pruning, planting, and inventory advancements. Jon Crain, Director of Parks, Forestry, and Recreation for the City of Port Washington, expressed his enthusiasm for the grant, sharing: “We are very excited to receive this grant. This aid will allow our team to focus on three very important aspects of our forestry program. We have a very diverse makeup of our urban forest, and with that, it is very important to track the progress of the species within our inventory. Since emerald ash borer hit our city in 2012, we took a very aggressive approach replanting, and these trees are now at an age where it is very important to structural prune them, which increases their longevity and helps them withstand the stresses of an urban environment. The third aspect of this grant will assist us in our current planting and replacement program.” A copy of this press release can be found on our website: https://lnkd.in/g6yw7r-J #YourHomePort

IS YOUR COMMUNITY TRYING TO ESTABLISH AN URBAN FORESTRY PROGRAM? Take some inspiration from Hillsboro, Oregon: In 2020, Hillsboro developed a 2035 Community Plan which included an action to establish an urban forestry program, including a new Urban Forester position. Last year, PlanIT Geo worked with Hillsboro to complete a Phase 1 UFMP project, which included a citywide canopy cover assessment, tree inventory data analysis, city staff engagement, and the city's current conditions and resources were benchmarked and cross-examined with analogous communities and industry standards. The findings from these planning elements were applied to a comprehensive urban forest audit ("Indicators of a Sustainable Urban Forest" adapted by PlanIT Geo from "A Model of Urban Forest Sustainability" by Clark, et al., 1997 and "Criteria and Indicators for Strategic Urban Forest Planning and Management" by Kenney, et al., 2011) that identified critical management needs that a new Urban Forester should or could address. In this exercise, the audit determined that for the category "City Staffing and Equipment" Hillsboro scored as "Low". Additionally, engagement with city staff identified shared priorities and concerns that could be addressed with the new position and program. Overall, staff identified staffing shortages as the second greatest challenge relating to Hillsboro's urban forest. In summary, the city's Community Plan brought attention to the need for an urban forestry position / program. The Phase 1 UFMP project identified the potential roles, responsibilities, programs, and policies for the city's consideration. Currently, the city is reviewing applicants for the Urban Forester position. You can read more about Hillsboro’s tree programs here: https://bit.ly/4d4nuNx Chris Peiffer

Switching to the new UK Forestry Standard ahead of 1st October 2024. Scottish Forestry has released information to help the forestry sector transition to the new 5th edition of the UK Forestry Standard (UKFS) 2023. The information for applicants and stakeholders with proposals underway, approved and new proposals, can now be found on Scottish Forestry's website (link below). The UKFS has been developed specifically for forestry in the UK and is based on applying internationally agreed criteria which support the delivery of sustainable forest management. Scottish Forestry will be updating the Forestry Grant Scheme to meet the UKFS good forestry practice requirements on species diversity. By actively managing our forests using the UKFS we will make them more resilient through ensuring good forest health. The new UKFS contains more rigorous requirements for deer management, and this will also enable the establishment of a broader range of species,?thereby boosting our forests’ resilience. Forest management plans will be expected to incorporate the new requirements at the time of forest plan renewal. Scottish Forestry encourages all forest owners who do not currently have a long term forest management plan to develop and adopt one. Further updates and resources, such as new templates and guidance will be made available over the coming months to aid applicants in complying with the new standard. Resources are being made available to aid applicants in complying with the new standard. Check the Scottish Forestry and Forestry Grant Scheme website for the most up to date information and versions of templates. LINKS TO DOCS 1. CMinstD | EHF Fellow | Elected Member, Nelson City Council. Working for a Just Transition, Intergenerational Leadership, Te Tauihu Regional Regeneration
Your 'vote' on Nelson City Council's forestry transition needed by 28 April. ?? ?? For the last four years I've been leading the local conversation on whether it's time for Nelson to take a different approach to reforestation of our Council-owned public reserves. Background here, https://lnkd.in/gEW94k6. Last year the Right Tree Right Place Taskforce, chaired by Dr Morgan Williams, reviewed Council's commercial forestry in our public recreation, landscape and conservation reserves, in the Maitai, Brook, Marsden and Roding water catchments. The taskforce recommended Council transition away from clearfell forestry, and replant diverse species for permanent afforestation, with the aim being, "A resilient, continuous canopy, forested landscape, rich in biodiversity, that supports the many values of the people of Te Tauihu and our future generations." Story here, https://lnkd.in/gkAy8MCc. Council accepted and unanimously supported the taskforce's report (story here, https://lnkd.in/gb2gWb_R), but now want to hear what the community think. The next critical step in securing the transition away from clearfell forestry in our public reserves, is through the Long Term Plan (LTP). Council is currently asking for submissions, and Council's Forestry Approach is one of the key issues for this LTP. A few minutes of your time is needed now (deadline is 28 April): There is one very brief question about whether you support the transition or not, and the opportunity to say why or why not. I encourage you to respond to this consultation, and share widely among your networks. We need to hear from as many people as possible to secure the forestry transition as recommended by the taskforce. ?? State forest pine plantations in NSW produce enough timber to build 40,000 new homes a year ?? Forestry Corporation has managed state forest plantations in NSW for more than 100 years. ? The 230,000 hectares of pine plantations produce enough timber in an average year to build 40,000 new homes – this is equivalent to all the homes in Bathurst, Orange and Oberon in the Central West of NSW.? ? Chief Forester Duncan Watt explains how plantations are monitored to ensure high quality pine is produced. ? “Given our plantation crops are usually grown to around 30 years of age, understanding how they grow long-term is an essential part of the planning process,” Duncan said. ? “We’ve been managing a comprehensive network of Permanent Sample Plots (PSPs) for many decades.? ? “These plots are re-visited and measured every few years to provide data across the entire landscape that allows us to predict what our plantations will look like in the future.”? ? The Softwood Plantations Forest Resources team recently established five new PSPs in our Bombala plantation.? ? “The trees are marked up so they can be clearly identified and measured on the same part of the stem each time,” Duncan said.? ? David Booby, who is pictured here measuring the diameter of a pine tree, is a long-serving member of our forest inventory team. ? He has worked with Forestry Corporation for 36 years. ? The pine seedlings planted when he first started in the role are now of an age to be harvested for timber. ? Managing a sustainable forest resource for the future, we replant every tree that is harvested. ? ?? More than 10-million pine seedlings, grown from seed at our Tumut and Grafton nurseries, are planted in state forest pine plantations every year. ? Our dedicated staff, like Duncan and David, are leaving a legacy in timber for future generations. ? To find out more about Forestry Corporation operations read our latest Sustainability Report here.https://lnkd.in/eBR_hTH5 #forestry #forestmanagement #fcnsw #nswstateforests #housing #nsw #timber #construction #auspol #pine #softwood #buildingindustry
