Today is Election Day, and it’s personal for us at Atabey & Co. Brittany and I—two Puerto Rican women, mothers, wives, and co-owners of this community-centered company—know firsthand the strength and resilience of our people. Our hearts are rooted in our island, our culture, and in the voices of women of color who have fought and continue to fight for a better future.
We are here because of the fierce women who came before us, who fought tirelessly for rights many once thought impossible. In 1920, white women gained the right to vote in the U.S., a monumental step forward. In 1935, Puerto Rican women gained their right to vote—another landmark in our shared journey toward equality and representation. And in 1965, Black women gained the right to vote with the Voting Rights Act—a full 45 years after white women.?
And even after that victory, women of color continued to face discriminatory barriers in housing, credit, and the workplace. It wasn’t until 1974 that women were legally protected to apply for credit on their own, and until the 1968 Fair Housing Act that discriminatory practices in housing were banned. Every milestone was hard-won. And yet, we know the work isn’t done.
At Atabey & Co., our mission is to amplify voices—especially those from Black and brown communities, the LGBTQ+ community, and women often left out of the conversation. We serve to create space, raise our voices, and keep pushing for the change we deserve.
Today, honor the legacy of these women and every sacrifice that’s brought us here. Make a plan. Go vote. Because we won’t go back, and together, we will keep moving this country forward. ???
