This would be a good case-study to explain why I keep harping https://lnkd.in/g4hpayGu on the problems of #CyberEconomics and #OrnamentalQuotient as defined at https://lnkd.in/gJjdxjdh. If we were to focus on our role as defenders and therefore on the vulnerabilities that we can control rather than the threat actor who we have no control over https://lnkd.in/g4jZfHCr, what would it take to avoid compromises of this nature with the SaaS solutions? I suggest the steps listed below (the dotted line). As one can see, the steps themselves aren't "rocket science". #ExecutingWell https://lnkd.in/ePKB3gvp in these steps is where I think many of us would fall short. Assuming we have necessary resources, I believe we would #ExecuteWell if we weren't distracted by the problems of #CyberEconomics and #OrnamentalQuotient. Hence my continued harping. ........... 1. Expect and demand secure configuration standards/recommendations from your SaaS vendors. The recommendations must include logging configurations, in addition to hardening requirements. 2. If the hardening/logging features are lacking, have the vendor commit to remediating the gaps asap in a future release. 3. Implement and maintain secure configurations of SaaS solutions and other technology components that would be "in scope"* as it relates to use of the solutions. 4. Collect logs and establish monitoring use-cases, or baseline for business-as-usual operations. 5. Monitor for anomalies or deviations from business-as-usual. 6. Investigate anomalies for incidents. 7. Respond to incidents effectively. *Though we aren't talking compliance here, I would consider the old PCI Guidance on scoping to determine the "in scope" components. (pdf) https://lnkd.in/gKFsXDXh
