Bolton Hospice worked with an Editor to secure a weekly spot in their local newspaper. IBW Familiarity with the Northland Increases Impact for Healthcare System Through its work with?NORTHLAND HEALTH CARE ACCESS, SAMUEL U RODGERS COMM HEALTH CENTER, and several other public health departments, hospitals and organizations in Platte and Clay counties comprising Kansas City’s Northland, IBW has become an invaluable part of the healthcare system. Karen Dolt is chief executive officer of NHCA – a nonprofit that operates several programs serving uninsured and underinsured patients. She noted strategic planning with IBW has identified care gaps in the community, leading to the addition of programs to better address need: “They have truly gotten to know the community in the Northland. IBW’s work amongst the different providers helps all of us tie together those strategic plans so they make a much stronger impact than if we were doing it in a silo." “Can well-trained volunteers provide safe clinical support?“ I appreciate that for some this proposal highlights the disparity between the value of these services and the funding available to support them. But the idea could still be viable and seems to have been successful in certain areas. It reminds me of the situations I’ve seen in the VCSE sector and highlights complementary models of practice. A crucial success factor would be fostering a supportive culture that brings together clinical staff, volunteers and patients. This culture could promote how volunteers and patients feel better connected when both attend with a clearer focus on the health benefits, less distracted by financial differences. But it would also need to address negative perceptions like fearing the lack of expertise, and less ability to enforce commitment. In some ways this could be about framing the service around social value with less focus on the economic situation. Highlighting the volunteers as people, not just roles, while promoting the depth of their collaboration with clinical team members. Either way, what the sector really needs and deserves right now is support. Both to find the right solutions and deliver them. Here’s a glimpse behind the scenes of what it takes to bring healthcare services to underserved communities: 1. Identifying Needs: Our outreach journey begins with thorough research and community engagement. We assess the specific health needs of different regions to ensure we provide the most relevant services. 2. Building Partnerships: Collaborating with local healthcare providers, volunteers, and sponsors is crucial. These partnerships enable us to pool resources, share expertise, and extend our reach. 3. Logistics and Resources: From securing medical supplies to arranging transportation and setting up clinics, the logistics behind an outreach event are complex. Our dedicated team works tirelessly to ensure every detail is managed flawlessly. 4. Volunteer Training: Our volunteers are the backbone of our outreach efforts. We invest time in training them to ensure they are equipped with the knowledge and skills required to deliver quality care. 5. Impact Assessment: After each outreach, we evaluate its impact on the community, gathering feedback to improve future events and ensure we are meeting the needs of those we serve. Based on popular demands, here’s how to go about an outreach, especially a medical one. Okay, maybe not based on “popular demands” but “some” demands?? First step is to draw out a plan, of course, do I need to even say that. Know your why, how, and what of doing this outreach. Is it just to mark attendance or to show that you also did “something”? I believe touching lives positively should be the overall goal, just my believe though. When all these are cleared. Now is when to map out the community to be reached, you should have options, so it will be easy to filter, asking questions is key here, if I hear that you want to do life alone!! When you’re sure of the community, either rural or urban, you have to meet with the gate keepers, if I hear that you are shy?? When you are visiting these stakeholders, be sure to communicate your intention clearly if possible in their local language and also ask questions to know the gaps they actually want. Don’t act like you know their problems already, that may be you jumping the gun. For a medical outreach, there will be multiple stakeholders e.g., the community leader, health facility head (this is particularly necessary to avoid marking of territory) no be only you sabi work oh, Hmmmn!! The truth is that you might not need them in the grand scheme of things, but you still need them to be aligned with you for success. While this is ongoing, you can call for volunteers, like I said earlier, you can’t do everything yourself and you will be amazed that people will actually show up. And you can also start calling for donations if you are a self funded initiative. People truly give to good causes. Also start publicity actively through fliers, infographics, videos, carousel explaining clearly what you intend to address and why it is necessary (you will need volunteers here if you are not skilled to make these publicities, see why I said you need people) What have I missed so far?
