A simple video that shows how bottles can be recycled. But it does not go into three important things. 1. The costs of this entire process including collection, sorting, transportation and recycling--IF DONE PROPERLY WITH FAIR WAGES AND MANAGING TOXIC GASES EMITTED WHILE RECYCLING--makes recycled PET reasonably expensive relative to virgin PET. 2. Due to this, a lot of effort is on "upcycling" recycled PET--making more expensive products like shirts, shoes, bags etc. Do I really want plastic clinging to my skin all day?? Or should these be made into furniture and bricks when we cannot be sure what toxins they will emit under various heat-humidity conditions (and somehow this furniture is always given to schools!! Never fancy offices!). Shoes and bags are probably ok. Good. But should we use more bottles and then make more stuff from it, and hope people buy those things for it all to be ok? Isn't that a strange circular logic? 3. PET cannot be recycled endlessly. Eventually it will end up in an incinerator or dumpsite or water body. There are many IF-BUTs in this simplistic note I've penned. But the bottom line is... REDUCING consumption is the most responsible thing we can do for the planet. Recycling comes further down the list.
