On May Day, I want to highlight the recent work of my colleagues Eric Apaydin, PhD and Margaret W., both researchers at the RAND Epstein Family Veterans Policy Research Institute. Focusing on working conditions, Eric and Margaret found “younger veterans appear more likely to hold jobs in occupation groups that involve greater physical and psychosocial hazards, and they are less likely to hold jobs that offer autonomy and creativity, compared with their nonveteran counterparts.” This essay is part of our Veterans Issues in Focus series. I found this video to be pretty informative and overall interesting. It’s a little long and I do think it overlooks some complexities to the economics it states when speaking of stagflation and inflation. With all that being said, I have a lot of CEOs and Operations leads on here. The Army as a whole may not be ready to tackle some of these issues but my friends in the civilian sector, you all can be. For my connections that are leaders in the Guard/Reserves full-time. I think we can do better and meet our FTE requirements with more flexibility. When we make it about our people...magic! People want to do good work, people also want to be cared for and feel connected at work. We as leaders can provide that good work and ensure there is connection and trusted relationships. ? Ask us how we are helping other organizations like yours put practical strategies in place ?

No clever earworms today. I hope the Labor Day weekend was good for you and yours. Riffing off this subject, take a moment to ask yourself: Does your organization have a business continuity plan (e.g., loss of power at the office)? What are our procedures if one of our employees is under threat in the workplace (e.g., disgruntled spouse, belligerent customer)? On Thursday I finished an online course entitled "Security Awareness Fundamentals" which includes such questions as above. Imagine the?déjà vu I experienced when someone close to me found themselves under physical threat at their (retail) place of employment. No harm came to this person, but what I thought was notable is both the manager on duty as well has as security personnel on premise were at a loss regarding what their company's standard operating procedure was. Know your SOPs, folks. Someone being under physical threat is no time for on-the-job learning. We now return you to the rest of 2024 with 17 weeks left to get all those things you promised your boss(es) you would get done.
