This is a real-life example of the stored-energy of a mooring hawser. The hawser appears to catch on the guide of the warping bollard. The point of this post isn't to assign blame, but to demonstrate the lesson to ALWAYS maintaining visual on the line you're hauling in. The winch can easily tension the line to 35 tonnes or more, and the elasticity of HDPE hawsers mean they absorb a lot of energy as 'potential energy' when stretched. That potential energy is converted to kinetic energy with millions of Newtons of force when it releases. #maritime #safety #management

A risk assessment must go beyond the paper-base, risk matrixes, etc. Due to the dynamic nature of RISK in general, there could be a deviation from what is observed, discussed, and captured on paper. Hence, the Last Minute Risk Assessment (LMRA) is needed. In my organization, Smit Lamnalco, we launched a campaign called "LMRA (Last Minute Risk Assessment). The idea is to allow individuals to assess the risks themselves from the start of the job, during the job, and upon completion of the job. This helped shift the focus from solely relying on the paper-based risk assessment to instead scanning the environment and identifying the hazards around them. On #tugalongTuesday it's a new year, new fleet addition for a new era of continuity in ship assist and towage. Renowned Mississippi operator E.N. Bisso & Son has taken delivery of a new ASD tractor tug. Named Mr Brian, after its Vice President of Operations, it is part of the company's fleet renewal plans. "Mr?Brian has an overall length of 31 m, a beam of 12 m, a hull depth of 4 m and a bollard pull of 68 tonnes. This comes from propulsion consisting of two Caterpillar 3516E main diesel engines generating 1,865 kW each at 1,600 rpm, compliant with US Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 4 emissions standards, and two Kongsberg US205S Z-drives, each with 2,400-mm four-blade stainless steel propellers in stainless steel nozzles. Tanks on?Mr?Brian?can store 137,100 litres of diesel, 50,000 litres of potable water, 8,300 litres each of lube and hydraulic oil and 9,100 litres of diesel exhaust fluid.?Electrical service is provided by two 118-kW Caterpillar generators powered by two Caterpillar C4.4 engines." The capacity of the tanks stated means that Mr Brian can be suitable for rescue missions in the Gulf of Mexico from its homeport in New Orleans. The EPA Tier 4 ratings mean that air quality at the ports of New Orleans and South Louisiana will be dramatically improved. Will more such tugs follow?
